It's nice how Calgary has it's own area, and it's double the rest of the province (outside of Banff or course)

Might be unrealistic, but as we have seen relatively consistent population growth over the last 20 years, seemingly independent of economic conditions:Calgary's population grew by almost 2% last year: StatCan report
Despite the downturn in the economy and the impacts of COVID-19, the city of Calgary was still the place to be for many people in Western Canada, a new report says.calgary.ctvnews.ca
Not sure if it's been posted but it looks like Calgary's CMA population grew by ~2% this past year or roughly 30,000 people (July 1 2019- July1 2020). StatsCan now puts our CMA population north of 1.5 Million at 1,543,283.

Pretty close, it would be somewhere around 80K. In the last census, the Foothills MD along with High river, and Okotoks etc,, added up to 77K IIRC. I'm guessing that number would be more like 80-82K by now. It's too bad that our CMA doesn't include Okotoks, High River, Strathmore and everything in between. That would possibly add another 100k to our population.
IMO our CMA will be expanded to include most of those regions in the next 10 years. Edmonton's is way bigger, and Calgary proper is mostly growing in those directions at the moment. It's too bad that our CMA doesn't include Okotoks, High River, Strathmore and everything in between. Agreed, and yeah it shouldn't be far off. It's a topic that has come up a few times. When you look at Foothills MD it seems obvious that it would be part of Calgary's CMA, but due to the formulae used by statscan it doesn't quite make it. Mostly because there is a fair amount of work travel between High River and Okotoks which offsets the percentage to/from Calgary. The XL Beef plant in High River is a large employer and maybe this is the reason...not sure. You would think there would be a lot of people from Calgary who work there, but maybe not high enough percentage.IMO our CMA will be expanded to include most of those regions in the next 10 years. Edmonton's is way bigger, and Calgary proper is mostly growing in those directions at the moment.
Does that statistic include the surrounding municipalities or is that figure specific to Calgary proper?
