TORONTO (CP) — Toronto has undergone "a dramatic architectural transformation" over the last 15 years, say the authors of a new book that gives a snapshot of some of the city’s most important recent buildings. "Design excellence has been a key factor in this building boom," say husband and wife team Margaret and Phil Goodfellow in A Guidebook to Contemporary Architecture in Toronto (Douglas & McIntyre).
The pocket-sized book groups projects by neighbourhood, from Scarborough in the east to Mississauga in the west, and identifies public transit options to get to each one. High-profile developments such as the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal at the Royal Ontario Museum and Frank Gehry’s transformation of the Art Gallery of Ontario are included along with several much less familiar buildings.
Among the latter is Evangel Hall on Adelaide Street West — "a prime example of a social housing project that successfully integrates the delivery of social services with high-calibre, thoughtful design." Parks, schools, university buildings, condos, libraries and private homes are all given equal treatment, with one page of text opposite a page of photos.
