If true perhaps I should change my comment to "snow removal policies and procedures won't fix dumb or dumber..." :(
 
Crossings were routinely blocked by windrows and even flat out ignored in my neighbourhood throughout the winter, too (for city-maintained paths). On some cases there were even random piles of snow inexplicably left by equipment in the middle of the pathways. Complete amateur hour shit.

I had to email the city (and props to them for changing it) for how they kept brushing snow off sidewalks into the street and not clearing through the street crossings to the next sidewalk. So every road crossing was just 3x thicker snow than the original sidewalks even had.

The incompetence of some of our city workers is so frustrating sometimes. This is basic training, QA, and service standards. How a winter city has workers doing stuff like that shows how little accountability there is within our city staff.
 
Yeah, I understand the pressures that they are probably constantly under, but this winter, I sometimes seriously questioned whether the sidewalk/MUP plow operators have ever had to walk anywhere in their lives before.

Who of us doesn't have pressure to do what we're paid to do?

Somehow I don't think the job pressures on those doing snow removal are anywhere near that experienced by EMT's or firemen or police officers or air traffic controllers or surgeons and other health care professionals or miners or loggers or pilots or coast guard personnel...
 
You’d think that even if the snow was piled on windrows, the city could clean them up in the warmer weather.

Oh, I 100% agree. Not sure whether these are subcontractors or city crews, but I hope that the several 311 reports I made throughout the winter were noted with at least some sort of followup. Often, it felt like screaming into the void.

It really, really bothers me how business/homeowners are held to a much higher standard than the city, and it definitely showed a lot through the body of work done by the city in several locations this winter. Impassable skating rink ice or 3+ inch deep puddles on shaded sidewalks/paths should not be acceptable, yet it still happens constantly (and when the issue is escalated, all that is given are excuses). If only Canadians were as litigious as Americans, lol.
 
I reported an abandoned vehicle on our street roughly ten times. Each time the complaint was closed but not dealt with. The people I talked to at 311 told me there was no room at the city lot for towed vehicles. I reported that my complaint was ignored. Weeks later, I received an email telling me that the reason the complaint was closed because there was no room at the city lot. None of which changes the fact that the car is still there, still illegally parked, and, during the big snow events, caused issues for the plows and other drivers. I am half tempted to smash the windows or something so that the police take it up (no, don't worry, I won't do that, but I'm hella frustrated). So I agree - without enforcement, what's to stop people from being selfish ijits?
