toonie's 10th year

That P.E.Trudeau bill is a trip!! It reminds me of some done back in the 70s in the US promoting ideas such as THE INFLATED STATES OF AMERICA with Daddy Warbucks as treasurer as an example. Items like this are always interesting political statements! LI MIKE

Toonie's 10th year

Everyone: As I collect coins myself somewhat and have always liked Canada's coin designs-I find that Canada has learned from our mistakes with the Susan B.Anthony dollar coin back in the 1979-80 period-when it became too costly to produce dollar bills Canada in the 1987-90 period eliminated them altogether with a coin that would stand out-the loon dollar. I always found interesting the use of two dollar coins and currency a good change-not shunned like the USA. The Toonie coin was a neat design and that polar bear just adds to its interesting appearance. I always liked Canada's currency designs also-so colorful compared to the stodgy traditionalism of US currency. The US only recently is jazzing up some designs-like the new beige $10 bill-in comparison Canada's designs are in many ways so much better than the US's. My personal favorite: the RCMP Musical Ride $50 bill. This is an interesting topic-about something we use virtually every day! LI MIKE

Re: Toonie's 10th year

I haven't really gotten used to using the Euro coins yet. In general, I think that they are quite ugly - especially the gold coloured ones. There is no trouble telling the 1 euro and 2 euro coins apart. There is a size difference and the colours are reversed in the two coins. I really think that there are just too many denominations - 1 cent, 2 cents, 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, 1 euro, 2 euro - which makes a handful of change harder to quickly assess.

I do really like the fact that each country in the EU produces its own coins with a unique image on one side and that these coins all get mixed together. I just pulled out of my pocket the following random sample:

One €2 coin from the Netherlands featuring Queen Beatrix
Two €2 coins from France featuring a tree design
One €1 coin from Belgium featuring King Albert II (who looks like PC in the PC and Mac adds)
One €1 coin from Italy featuring that multi-armed guy drawn by Leonardo da Vinci
One 50 cent coin from the Netherlands featuring Queen Beatrix
One 20 cent coin from Belgium featuring the PC guy again
One 20 cent coin from Germany featuring the Brandenburg Gate
One 20 cent coin from Spain featuring Miguel de Cervantes

The bills are very underwhelming.

Coinage and global warming.

The topic clearly has become a religious belief.

Surprising that the Polar Bears made it through all the other warm periods over the last 12,000 years, though.

Japan uses a $5 coin. It's not as much of a hardship as you might think.

The nice thing about it is that when your wallet is empty, you think you have no money... then you empty your pocket and find you have well over $20 in change.

One of the things I like about Canadian coins is the different designs which I think makes it more interesting to receive change. For our quarter, I count no fewer than 43 different designs currently in circulation (and more to come).

if only someone built a coke machine large enough for that to fit into.

The Toonie,Loonie and the TTC Token...

Everyone: That photographed giant Toonie coin is in Cambellford,Ontario? Is there a giant Loonie in Echo Bay? Anyone have a pic of that one? What Prometheus says about a big Coca-Cola machine-imagine the size of the bottle you would get from it!!
I think the idea of a giant TTC token outside TTC Headquarters or outside a major subway station is a really good one...provided it is NOT COUNTERFEIT of course!!;) It would generate alot of good publicity for the TTC in my opinion. LI MIKE

Yes, it's in Campbellford. The artist who created the polar bear image is from there.
