thank you for that shot of the Ford! i've always been kind of obsessed by it for some reason. It seems unusual in the context of the city, because Toronto has always been lacking in large-scale gritty inner city hotels. The Ford just seems like one of those 'if these walls could talk' kind of places...
Anyway, that's the best shot i've seen of it.

The rest of what the Atrium replaced:

The building on the corner in the above shot was eventually replaced by this:

Coward Clothes? Intriguing. A love looking at all these old photos, gives me some good idea about settings and plots in future stories of mine.

thanks for the Yonge Dundas shots--i've never seen that corner from the 20's-30's. looks pretty grim in a way.
i guess it wasn't really a 'destination' spot until Eaton's decided to move their store north to that corner.
all the action was down on Queen at that time i suppose...

gotta love that old coca cola delivery truck

Then and Now (Now - as of 7pm May 6 2008). Yonge and Dundas.

Uhhh, couldn't this go in the Bay & Dundas thread? I really like this "Then and Now" convention, but...keeping track of 6 similar threads is starting to tax me :S

ok, I'll start to consolidate them with my future new posts:) Mods, feel free to amalgamate the existing threads if you have time.

Anyone have pics of the Ford Hotel? Anyone know why it was demolished?

Neighbourhood blight, and I'm not sure whether the properties on the block were already being assembled for what was to become the Atrium On Bay.

If it survived, it would have been a natural for the Jane's Walk led by Sasha...

College Park building

Then. Amazing that an entire downtown street was wiped out to build this.

Now. As far as I can make it from my old city maps, Buchan was here.

By the early '70s upstairs from the Brown Derby was a Ryerson hangout called San Francisco, where OCA students also went to get drunk - when we weren't drinking at the Bev, or inhaling at OCA.
