I believe ProjectEnd was pointing out that the Glass Insulated Units that meet and continue briefly above the roof were damaged. The damage does seem minimal compared to what I would imagine for a crane collapse.
 
I was under the impression that tower cranes had working space limiters that prevented just this sort of thing from happening?
 
I'm glad no one was injured in this.

It looks like someone is in for some real expensive crane rental bills....hopefully that someone somehow ends up being Cadillac Fairview.
 
Could have been way worse. Nobody died, nobody was seriously injured. Minimal damage as well. Might delay things for a week but overall not a huge fiasco that it easily could have been.
 
I watched the CP24 video. About 6-8 glass panels on the neighbouring building seem to have cracked.

Maybe it's no big deal that building has been cracked. Isn't it set for demolition anyway? Maybe the cracking of those glass panels was just an unorthodox way to commence the demo to make way for this new building:

You're playing semantics here. Yes the OTPP fully owns Cadillac Fairview, but it's a subsidiary company. Thus, CF is responsible for their own daily operations and costs. At the end of the day it could be that only the CF division suffers a small hit, not OTPP as a whole.

If a division or a subsidiary makes a loss or a profit, it will be reflected in the accounts of the 'owners'. I doubt the cost of extra crane rental and repairs will make any real difference to OTPP but ......

Ultimately at the end of the day, this is all true.
 
It may be time for some perspective here. Tower cranes are normally provided by the forming contractor on the job. The forming contractor is selected and contracted by the General Contractor, in this case PCL. Insurance - bonding and liability - would be normal. A responsible client would not hire a construction company without having insurance in place.

Without any specific knowledge of the details in this situation, I would expect that the client, Cadillac Fairview, and ultimately OTPP, should not be too exposed. I doubt that CF / OTPP would have tried to save a few dollars by requesting PCL to cut out insurance coverage on this project, and pass the savings on to them.

So unless PCL did something to contribute to this accident happening, responsibility would probably rest with the forming contractor - they would either own or have leased the crane in question, and would have been the ones responsible for its operation. And again, I would expect that they would carry liability insurance for their role in this project.

Compared to whom? Do you have any idea how construction works?
