Those light masts indeed have projectors on them. They were used frequently when the square opened but they seem to have gone into disuse. The square itself was equipped with tiny coloured LED lights built into the floor but they didn't last into the first few months.

Hopefully the city will take a second look at the square now that it's mostly fulfilled its original goal of becoming a popular gathering place. The stage for one needs to be rebuilt as it's become a mishmash of poor cumulative decisions.

The square's relationship with Victoria Street should be rethought. Right now, it just faces the street with the blank walls of the back of the stage covered in some cheap signage. It doesn't look good from CityTV's storefront studio. Victoria Street shouldn't be an ugly deadzone because of the square.

Yes, this is true but how to achieve this is surely a problem. The backs of stages are seldom too friendly or exciting.

The square was designed to not have a back. It worked at first but then they needed storage for the chairs and the Victoria side became the place to put them. Eventually they built that ugly shed and the rest is history.

That's a good segue back into this thread: street furniture. The off spec extra tables and chairs bungled the whole thing. I like them, but more seating should have been built into the square to begin with. Permanent seating and tables should be installed along the canopy and the centre of the square should be left to spontaneous programming.
