I just joked with one of the workers this morning as I walked by. There are pylons EVERYWHERE and I joked "Are you guys making an obstacle course?", The guy chuckled and, over the sound of traffic, I thought I heard him say "We're laying tracks" or tractors or something lol.

I assume that at least part of the work on Eastern is for the new watermain. https://www.waterfrontoronto.ca/construction-notice-3-broadview-and-eastern-flood-protection-project

Oh that. further up Eastern Avenue, well east of the hub (right now), there is a lot of watermain construction. Some of it has been completed east of Knox Avenue. West of Knox looks to be in progress. I took picks of that too as I walked. 😂 I don't see any work or pipes around the area west of Broadview (yet).

I guess, technically, not the right thread but if this work is headed all the way to, and through, the Eastern Hub, I guess it applies to some extent...

The traffic cones are in place though (minus any pipe materials), based on the images from the WFT webpage though for sure. West side of Broadview on Eastern Avenue.

I've been posting shots of that area in the generic Ontario Line thread, since it's not part of the station. Although, I've always posted Gerrard & Exhibition portals in the station threads as well as the OL thread, so I will start to do that with the Lower Don Crossing going forward.

Here is a shot from yesterday and couple weeks ago of the cut & cover tunnel East of Cherry St. and Lower Don Crossing.

One thing I keep wondering and haven't really seen it addressed is how they plan to go over/under the bala sub that turns north on the immediate west side of the valley. Is there enough space to come off the new bridge and dive deep to get under the tracks? but then in the first photo above, looks like the ontario line will dive well west of the merger of bala and the main CN trunk line. Anyone come across details of this?

Watch here between 30-40s mark and you’ll see how the Bala sub will shift overtop of the open cut portal section once it is covered.

Great pics as usual. I still don’t understand how the Broadview extension is going to get thru the wall of elevated tracks? Why wasn’t a bridge/opening already framed in along the eastern portion when that was built?
I imagine there is still some ordering of staging left still. Why it wasn't done with the rest of the corridor, I don't know. Once the northern part of the corridor is built they will probably shift the tracks north and rebuild the southern half.

Broadview is funded to be extended down to Lakeshore as far as I know as a part of the East Harbour contract.

Part of the Reason SmartTrack was cut back in station count is because the City bloated out the contracts with a bunch of "extras" like road network work in the areas surrounding the stations (i.e. the Broadview extension).

I read that somewhere recently....Sorry I can't recall where. Perhaps the word I read was 'deferred'.View attachment 693015

Be careful with AI search results. Depending on how you word your search, it will change the result. For example. My search result using Google shows this as an AI result...

The Broadview Avenue extension project has not been cancelled; it is moving forward through the detailed design and implementation phases.

The project, which will extend Broadview Avenue between Eastern Avenue and Lake Shore Boulevard East, is a key part of the larger development of the East Harbour Transit-Oriented Community and is being coordinated with several other major infrastructure initiatives, including the construction of the East Harbour Transit Hub and the Broadview and Eastern Flood Protection (BEFP) project.

Key updates and current status:

Environmental Assessment Completed: The Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (MCEA) study for the extension has been completed, and the Environmental Study Report was made public in late 2023.

Detailed Design Underway: The project is in the detailed design phase. The City is working with Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario to finalize necessary agreements for design and construction.

Enabling Works: The associated Broadview and Eastern Flood Protection project is currently in the construction phase (as of late 2025) and is essential infrastructure that will allow for the future Broadview Avenue extension to be built.

Funding and Timelines: The extension is critical for the East Harbour development, with construction of a segment required to start by a specific date to trigger financial contributions from the developer.

In summary, the project is active and progressing, not cancelled.
