The laneway must become a vibrant space like those in places like Melbourne. Save the car-oriented laneways for "new urban" suburbia.
Yeah right! In our dreams! Notice the date on that article...July 6 2011. When was the last time anyone heard about this scheme going forward?
I've posted a couple images from Melbourne elsewhere - it's a city much more like Toronto than anywhere else I can think of...except for things they have done right. Where we have an artist rendering from two years ago for a plan that is unlikely to ever be realized...

Notice the tram line through the centre of the pedestrian mall? Can you imagine councilors in Toronto allowing such a thing with out barriers, walls, motes....you name it?
