Is it possible to implode this eyesore? Or will the owners convert it into high priced rentals?

You can't implode such a valuable asset just because it is unattractive. The only way that would work would be to replace it with an 80-storey tower but that would never fly with Kyle.

Why even implode? Aesthetics aside, it's a waste of material. Remember those "embodied energy" arguments on behalf of the Riverdale half-round?

I can picture a conversion/recladding, though...

W is not a competitor for the Four Seasons. They are going after different segments of the market.

That is ridiculous. They are both upscale brands (obviously the FS is higher) and there must be a sizable overlap of potential guests. I myself have contemplated both options frequently when traveling and would choose one or the other based on price and location to other amenities and destinations.

An entry level suite at the FS runs about $500 while a mid-sized suite at the W could easily run $450+ in the same market.

It's like saying that Lexus doesn't compete with Mercedes just because Mercedes is more expensive.

It's not just about the expense.

W is going for the youngish urban hipster who can't really afford $450 a night, but who is nevertheless willing to pay the price to impress the date for the weekend.

4S is for the crowd that is 50% older and 100% richer, and who can afford both the room and the viagra needed to really pull the weekend off well.

For business travelers, W is for the tech companies while 4S is for the resource extractors.

I agree with you but still maintain that they compete for the same traveler's dollars. I fall into neither camp described above and yet have stayed at both hotels, numerous times, for different reasons.

It's quite possible that if W gained control of it that they would re-brand the building, modernize it, and go after their typical crowd.

But if Investor is right and a Toronto developer bought it, then who knows what will happen. Maybe they'll update the building and let a hotel company (like W) manage it. Maybe they'll convert to condos. Anything is possible I guess.

I always felt Cumberland Terrace should be destroyed and a modern hotel/condo should be built there. A tower and podium style development. Have a rooftop pool/bar, cabanas, etc. That might be more W's style. Would be a great hotspot for the TIFF.

I wonder what has happened to that W rumor on King St West? I could see this being a good spot for a St Regis perhaps

380-tonne building moved 100 metres in Toronto's Yorkville

The 5,500 square-foot Four Seasons private residences presentation gallery in Toronto recently took a trip north — and in the middle of a snowstorm. The 760,000 pound (380-tonne) building was lifted using 32 hydraulic jacks and moved 100 metres from Bay Street and Yorkville Avenue to the north side of Scollard Street. A crew of eight moved the building in only four hours using two trucks with winches. The building was relocated to make way for construction in the spring of the Four Seasons private residences and hotel. Menkes’ High Rise Residential Group worked with Laurie McCulloch Holdings Ltd. to complete the project.
