Given that getting an NFL team to Toronto is such a pipe dream, I am quite happy to have the Ford Bros. take up their time, attention, and efforts with this silly project, rather than doing things like tearing up streetcar tracks and bulldozing the waterfront to put in Wal-Marts. If we can just dangle this in front of them for the next several years, the city might actually survive their reign.

Maybe mayor Rob has fantasies of coaching NFL football? Maybe that's how Dougie can push Robby off in order to let him run for mayor.

So was getting the Raptors in as said by Mr. Stern in 1989.

That this is so important to them... I find simply pathetic. They could be two rich fat bullies in a boarding school novel.

I have an idea

Scrap Rogers Centre.

Build the Blue Jays their very one baseball only park in Downsview.

Then make this a new all purpose domed stadium, so it can be convertible, for concerts, trade show, rallies, mass funerals, etc.

A quick check of Solidiers Field website doesn't paint a very pretty picture. Only 11 events between now and September 17th. Of those events, 7 are charity events, meaning the amount of revenue being generating is at the very least questionable. Two are soccer games, of which we have BMO Field for. One is a college football game. One is a U2 concert. Doesn't look too promising.

Probably because its an outdoor only stadium.

Maybe if people wern't bitching about taxes and looking at the bigger picture once in a while Smitherman would be mayor. People are greedy and this is what we get.

Good news, everyone! He's talked to someone else, and now we're going to renovate the Rogers Centre instead. Or something.

Councillor Ford talks football again, gets hate mail

http://www.thestar.com/news/article/987073--councillor-ford-talks-football-again-gets-hate-mail?bn=1

To be a major player in North America, Toronto needs an NFL team.

That’s what Doug Ford told a local newspaper in January, a month after taking office and it’s a pipe dream he’s been plugging to sporting officials, private investors, and reporters ever since.

The idea isn’t new, but concerns over a suitable stadium, large enough fan base and most importantly, American television ratings, have prevented any serious discussion.

Undeterred, Ford is committed to get the ball rolling. Most recently, the football fanatic spoke with TheScore.com’s Brad Gagnon.

The interview was picked up by sports media across North America, from USA Today to CBS Sports to ESPN. But it caused a firestorm in New Orleans. Ford told Gagnon at least two franchises — Jacksonville and New Orleans — could potentially make the move to Toronto.

After reading the reports, the New Orleans Saints’ vice president of communications took to Twitter: “Reports about the Saints as a potential team moving to Toronto are completely false. The New Orleans Saints are committed to the city of New Orleans.”)

Ford apologized later to local media, stating it was “an off-the-cuff remark” based on a rumour. His office was reportedly flooded with emails from angry Saints fans.

Controversy aside, Ford addressed many of the potential problems in the Score interview.

And what about the venue problem? In February, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said at the league’s annual state of the league press conference that while Toronto is a great market, the current stadium, the Rogers Centre, “is a multi-purpose stadium, has a relatively small capacity by NFL standards.”

Ford has a solution.

Ford told Gagnon he has spoken with officials at Rogers communication about digging down to add an additional 15,000 seats. The renovations wouldn’t cost taxpayers a dime and furthermore, he added, thousands of jobs would be created.

“(The NFL) can’t keep ignoring a market this size,” Ford said.

And what about scarce turnout when the Buffalo Bills occasionally play in town?

“If we had our own team,” Ford told the Score, “we’d treat it like it’s our own and build up a fan base.”

There is a “big difference.”

For decades, media and sports mogul Paul Godfrey has been pushing for a Toronto NFL franchise. In 2006, cable magnate Ted Rogers and Larry Tanenbaum, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment chairman, expressed interest in luring a team to the city.

Ford did not respond to an interview request from the Star.

Your comparing a 25-team NBA to a 32 team NFL? What makes you think that the NFL wants to expand? What makes you think that you can steal away a team from someone else?

Since you know everything about everything why don't you tell us how he's wrong.

Numerous flaws in Ford's plan have been pointed out several times in this thread.

Great! Let's get started! You do have billions in your bank account to make this happen, right?

Brilliant idea! I propose that the first mass funeral should be for this pie-in-the-sky "proposal" for a Portlands stadium.

And what made you think the NBA wanted to do any of that.

Like you have seen the money. Just because you haven't does not mean he hasn't.

Great! Let's get started! You do have billions in your bank account to make this happen, right?

It was a suggestion.

Crazy childish BS of forum members asking other forum members if they have the cash to throw in to an NFL team...lets be realistic here when it comes to finances.

Digging down??? If you dig down and build an additional 15,000 seats, there's no way you can fit a football field in the Skydome . Are the Argonauts supposed to play on half a field? In addition, shouldn't our mayor be supporting Toronto's pro sports teams rather than destroy one of them (our oldest) by bringing in a foreign product?

Mr. Ford: fly to the United States if you want US football. We already have a football league in this country and the a football team that's 138 years old.
