Hello all, could anyone tell me whether this building is starting to look like the pictures? Curious to know the progress of construction.
The area of Carlton between Yonge and Jarvis has some of the most unfortunate buildings in Toronto. They should do something with the eastern blank wall facing Jarvis St. Its very unfortunate!
TORONTO - Dozens of post-secondary students could end up on the streets as their downtown residence is still under construction.
The Parkside Student Residence, formerly the Primrose Hotel — at Carlton and Jarvis Sts., is still a construction zone.
Matt Smith, of B.C., signed a contract in July for his daughter, who is a first-year Ryerson University film student.
“They guaranteed to be open Aug. 18, then it was pushed back to Aug. 27 and then to Sept. 2. They never communicated to us that the building wasn’t ready,” Smith said.
The private residence, which isn’t affiliated with any university, has been housing students in hotels, but that can’t last forever as it is high season for bookings.
“The building isn’t done yet. We are providing beds and food to the students, but that is all I can say,” said Samantha Cora, with Parkside Student Residence. She couldn’t give a date as to when the residence would be finished.
Smith’s daughter Alyssa was one of dozens of students put up at the Chelsea Hotel.
But with the busy convention season and events such as TIFF on the horizon, it’s not clear how long the students can stay as rooms are booked.
“I’m not able to provide details about our guests,” the Chelsea’s Tracy Ford said.
“This is a very busy time in the city with higher occupancy. I couldn’t say how long we can accommodate (the students).”
Smith’s contract with Parkside was for $1,250 a month, which included rent and a meal plan.
“They have just gone silent, gone dark and the building is only half done,” he said.
“They don’t answer calls. I have a year contract and it’s paid.”
