Love this building, but I do wish it was taller. Toronto is hightist! Why is Toronto afraid of shadows?

Oh and the Sapphire Tower was gorgeous and should have been built.

I will say this: It was tacky, but big-city. To have been realized would have been a feat, and we'll never know how it would have looked. But what we do know is what was built played it safe, and is forgettable as a result.

Yes, I would have loved to see EY done taller, but I understand why shadows need to be addressed, specifically at this location. Just bad luck from a height point of view that our Financial District is in City Hall's front door with not much room in either direction.

The Sapphire Tower would've probably looked like the HNR or Velocity or whatever tower. At least in terms of quality. A design like that is almost guaranteed to look atrocious in this city.

As for this tower, I actually agree that it would've looked better taller but with a caveat. I feel the design doesn't match the site. The building would look far better stretched out, maybe another 50-100m. But, I also agree wholeheartedly with Council's desire to avoid excessive shadowing on NPS. With that in mind, I'd say it's the developer's failure to see that this design would be so stumpy looking and their failure to not look for a more suitable design for this site and the height limit imposed.

Edit: Also, despite my complaints about this one being stumpy, I don't care too much. It's pretty ugly from some angles (though hopefully the crown on this one will help) but the restored heritage building is really well done and totally makes up for what might be an uglier (though far from ugliest) office tower.

Goddamn does the rebuild look good!
A huge thank you and Job well done for those who worked on the project at least the heritage portion. fantastic! I now see why the new portion is shaped the way it is... And where they got their inspiration from of the details on the heritage parts near top and those "mountain" shapes. Bravo team EY and can't wait for the top to be done cause right now the angle is throwing me off. It does not appear to match the render... But the seems a steeper more upright angle the say the 45 degree I had thought it appeared in its render. Still thinking it will. Look good it her way mind you.
