I am in love.

Great job Ryerson/Loblaws! The majority of one of the cathedrals of hockey remains a place that will see sports.

Is that enough seating for basketball at such a huge school? It's nice but the size of a typical high school gym.

I would imagine that that is plenty of seating for a Canadian University basketball game. If they ever outgrew that they could just invest in a portable floor and make the hockey space do double duty.

If I am not mistaken, there are no Pan Am 2015 events at this location (please, please correct me if I am wrong) and that seems a shame. Not only is this a wonderful venue...it is worth showing the world how an old building can be so wonderfully re-purposed.

Actually, in terms of seating capacity, Ryerson is planning to do exactly as you guessed. Scroll to the bottom of this link: http://www.ryersonrams.ca/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=22300&ATCLID=205584532

"The new 1,000 seat Coca-Cola Court will serve as the primary home court for Ryerson's basketball and volleyball teams. The Rams will also play select contests in the Mattamy Home Ice arena."

I've been told they already purchased a separate floor that was used during this past year's NCAA final four, and that the plan is to convert the rink for "big" games, such as playoffs, the annual frosh week game, maybe also against U of T, etc. I've heard that would boost the 2,600-seat rink to about 4,000 compared to the 1000-seat capacity in the gym.

I would expect this also to happen for the Pan Am Games, because the Gardens is actually one of the venues and will be used for basketball: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/toronto/torontos-pan-am-games-venues/article4108252/

Excellent, thanks!

The official grand opening is Sept. 6 to 9 and I am looking forward to seeing the new arena - Toronto Star article:
Ryerson’s Reborn Maple Leaf Gardens Rink Set for Grand Hockey Opening

...On Sunday, Sept. 9, between 1 and 2:30 p.m., the public will get its first taste, when Ryerson first opens the ice for a free community skate. And the rink will soon be available to rent for $300 an hour prime time — $192 after 11 p.m. The official grand opening is Sept. 6 to 9, although there has already been a “lights on†opening on Aug. 13, attended by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The new rink’s first hockey game is Sept. 8, when Ryerson’s men’s Rams team plays host to the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Ridgebacks....

They're not my pictures :p
They were taken by Norm Betts (normbetts@canadianphotographer.com) and posted on the Mattamy Athletic Centre fan page on FB.

Is that a concert taking place? If so, that could be great news. This city needs more concert venues around that size.
