The Core Architects project page offers some engineering details:

The recessed footprint of the existing building enabled the structural engineers to introduce new vertical structural steel columns all along the exterior face of the building on all four exposures that go vertically down to sound rock. These new vertical structure columns surrounding the existing building will support the new residential floors independently of the existing building structure.

There are also new horizontal perimeter steel beams along the face of the existing building exterior and cross bracing to attract the lateral load from the additional residential floors. Long span transfer beams will be utilized in the 20th floor. These transfer beams will distribute the load of the new tower directly to the new vertical steel structure that surrounds the existing building. The new vertical structure will go down to the foundation rock without stressing any of the existing structure

So there will be transfer beams to carry the weight of the addition to the steel frame down to the bedrock.

That is just wild. The guy on the 5th floor looks petrified. So am I understanding correctly that the crane attaches the yellow steel clamping object to the side of the building and then they simply cut that section of facade away? It's fascinating.

If this building is being demolished, why is it listed as under construction on skyscraperpage? (just curious)

It's not being demolished. They're simply removing the facade, and contemporaneously building new support columns.

I am torn between the blight and gutting of this building, and marveling the architectural engineering of the exoskeleton.
This beautiful hackjob should be happening to 100/153/170 University.
