Consistent with @DSCToronto 's good news above......we have permit news:

Don't forget they asked for bids on the lighting about 5 or 6 years ago but then cancelled the bids. I am hopeful they will not do this this time but, like opera, 'it's not over until the fat lady sings'

I wouldn't count on anything with respect to the city (and especially at Union Station) - not even after they have put up the chandeliers.

Removing that is in the 2031 capital expenditures budget.

I went there this morning to look at the area and the bollards are not really to stop vehicles entering that area they are to stop vehicles demolishing the wall and/or parking on the large cover of a pit of some kind. Whether any vehicles should be allowed there at all is an open question but vehicles CAN get there and I guess signage of some sort is thus required.

Where does that glass structure lead to?

In other news, bollards are completed in front of the taxi stand on Front Street, jersey barriers still in place for the time being.

A couple of observations: if they could do bollards in this central section where the road above the subway station is the most shallow, then why install shin breaking concrete blocks everywhere else?

Like the concrete blocks, the bollards are far too closely spaced. Is there a 70cm wide car they’re worried about? All of the “anti-terror” infrastructure here seems not to be aimed at a functional and safe pedestrian plaza, but instead designed to pad contractor budgets.

I’d have to go take a look myself, but these bollards do seem to be much better than the concrete blocks. As for their close spacing, they seem to be similar to those placed around sensitive government buildings in the US like courthouses and federal offices. So not ideal from a pedestrian perspective but certainly not unprecedented.

I ended up spotting finished bollards on the west side of the plaza. They’re functional, certainly not pretty.

They’re less obtrusive than the concrete blocks though the spacing just barely lets through someone wheeling a suitcase next to them.

I’m just relieved that this 8 year national nightmare is almost over. Ok, I’m exaggerating but this took way too much of our lives going around ugly jersey barriers for what could’ve been a straightforward solution.

To be fair, is it that hard to wheel the suitcase behind you? Honestly it's more polite to do that around Union given the amount of people moving around.

That said, these bollards are pretty meh, we could have done much better.
