Maybe the TTC should get together with HGTV and produce a series on designing the new streetcars, and later the new light-rail vehicles.

imo we don't appreciate in this city how pretty and iconic our red transit seats are compared to other transit systems

Attention streetcar designers. Make sure you add the green advance light (LED of course) on the top middle on the front of each car. Similar to the old PCC and Peter Witt's, so that it would be identified as a Toronto streetcar. You can still have smaller light indicators of the side top, but let's return to the advance light on the new streetcars/LFLRV.

The Exterior image shows a folded pantograph. Am I to assume the new cars will come equipped with pantographs, or just the same car will be used for the TC routes too?(Double-ended, of course)

Some buses are required to have blue lights on the upper corners, in addition to the amber clearance lights. The blue lights indicate handicap accessibility for the vehicle.

The new streetcars will have the blue corner lights for the handicap accessibility indication. So we should be able to have the TTC green advance overhead light, unlike the green corner lights that the CLRV's have.

Loflurv kind of rolls off the tongue. The Toronto Transit Commission is looking for help in naming its new low-floor, light rail vehicles that will start to replace its aging streetcar fleet in 2013 and is asking the public to weigh in. “Every time we’ve done something like this we’ve had a really great response,†TTC spokesman Danny Nicholson said Monday. “The streetcars actually belong to the citizens of Toronto. They’re there for the people so we want to make sure they have a say in how they look.â€

"Every time we’ve done something like this we’ve had a really great response,†TTC spokesman Danny Nicholson said Monday. “The streetcars actually belong to the citizens of Toronto. They’re there for the people so we want to make sure they have a say in how they look.†It’s not just a name the TTC wants help with - they’re also asking people for design advice, and have set up a website (lrv.ttc.ca) with a survey and video of the new vehicles.

“People can have their input on things like the colour scheme and the fabric of the seats,†Nicholson said. “It’s more of the final make-up touches, so to speak.†More than 10,000 people sent in their comments back in 2007, when the TTC was first starting the process to buy the 204 new cars, to be built by Bombardier in Thunder Bay.

The TTC says the new cars will have more seats, be wheelchair-accessible, with air conditioning and space for bike, although Nicholson couldn’t point to any specific features that were brought forward by the public, “All of the response were taken very seriously,†he said. Prototypes of the new cars – which are costing more than $1.2 billion – will arrive in 2011, with the final product hitting the rails in 2013.

Low Floor Rocket :D

Hopefully none of the final suggestions contain the word "Toronto" or "Rocket". That's been wasted on the new subway trains.

Toronto Life weighs in...

streetcarexterior-624x350.jpg

For the exterior:

1) Cowcatcher to discourage jaywalkers

2) Rear spoiler for aerodynamics

3) Ladder for car surfing

4) Purple flames to emphasize “Riding the Rocket”

5) Powerful laser beam that can change all red lights to greens

6) In addition to streetcar number, the LED scroll sign will feature live Twitter fights between mayoral candidates

7) Astromech droid to help with repairs and to change rail direction so that drivers don’t have to get out and do it themselves with a crowbar

streetcarinterior-453x624.jpg

For the interior:

1) Black light to indicate which seats are soiled with blood

2) Disco ball to accommodate Friday-night streetcar parties

3) Luxurious curtains for those long commutes

4) Outlets for industrial-strength Glade Plug-Ins

5) Authentic faux designer leopard print seats

6) Grates in the floor to drain away spilled coffee, cola, urine, etc.

7) Spring-loaded seats to eject anyone taking up two seats

Well considering the real RED ROCKET name belongs to streetcars not subways I see no reason why not to use it, but seriously this whole thing with naming streetcars and subways is really stupid. The vehicles are called by their series name ie: H5,H6,T1,CLRV, ALRV and the last but not least PCC the darling of all streetcars. Getting back to the new low floor streetcars [what a stupid vehicle for our weather conditions] I just hope we do get the Cowcatcher because it will be used to shovel all the snow out of the way. Also we will not be using the pantograph as it requires stronger overhead wires and more poles along the routes to keep the tension.

The interior of the new streetcars could be higher than our current streetcars, because of the low floors. I would like to see overhead storage racks to store your backpack, briefcase, or package. Maybe the rack could go up out of the way when it is empty, and has to be pulled down to use it. It has to remain down when something is in it, to act as a reminder.
