As I mentioned elsewhere today (sorry for going OT there) I think this is a brilliant proposal! In fact, I believe I was the source of this idea.:)

Everyone, unless you're Amish, has heard of these big chain stores, shops at any one of them sometime through out your life; so what's the big deal about using their money to expand the system for the public good? Does having a Mcdonald's or Walmart facing a public street make the natives get upset about who's helping to pay the neighbourhood tax bill? Right. So what's the big leap towards funding TTC stations?

Of course, I'd go one step further and actually build a big box store into the station itself. Think about all the poor or disabled people who would benefit from not having to walk from a TTC station through an enormous parking lot to the mall!

Next station: No Frills.;)
 
If this had the potential to bring in billions, it might actually be worth it, but the drop in the bucket this would likely provide in terms of funds is hardly worth the surrender of our collective civic dignity.
 
Here's a better idea, how about we just make all the ttc employees wear jerseys with corporate logos all over them much like european hockey.

To comment on some points in the Star article:

Dubai may be selling naming rights for their system, but the fact that it is Dubai doing it should sound alarm bells. Dubai is the world capital of crassness and tackiness, excess and greed, and there is no lesson in civic policy that can be learned from that city other than "don't do what we do". People do not want their lives turned into a 24 hour-a-day chance to be advertised to: Toronto Councillors should remember that they represent us as citizens, not as consumers.

As much as I am for the expansion of the subway system in this city, it is the job of our elected officials to find ways to improve the transit service without crossing certain lines, like the line that keeps Toronto from looking like a laughing stock.

Consider if we were to sell the naming rights for civic wards: right now I could most appropriately see Peter Milczyn's Ward 5 becoming the Everything For A Buck Ward. How would you like to sit in that seat Peter?

The TTC makes a maximum of $20 million from advertising a year. That includes everything from OneStop, to exterior and interior card advertising, to bus wraps, to station domination.

St. George is practically already named for a company, the only thing that changes is the sponsor the way the ads are on every possible surface. Right now, it's Kleenex Station.

So even if the TTC could get millions from station renamings, that would devalue the existing ads and would only make a small dent in their budget.

Sorry, interchange, but sometimes I'd like to make the new Toronto border at the Humber River. At least to send these Etobijoke politicans to a place where they'd fit in. Mississauga, of course. (The problem there, though, instead of naming things after companies, they name things after their dear eternal mayor).
 
Ooh. That's a brilliant idea, Sean. What if we sold the naming rights to Hazel McCallion?

Actually, I might be onto something. Don't sell the naming rights to subway stations. Sell the naming rights to ward councillors! Insist that at all council meetings and public events, they be referred to by their sponsor's name. Make them parade around in logo-clad suits like NASCAR drivers. I wonder what Mr. Goodyear Tires Milczyn would make of that?
 
Maybe the City of Vaughan could buy the naming rights to the mayor of Toronto to rub things in. Mississauga could settle on the naming rights to Council Chambers.

In tonight's news, the City Above Toronto, the City of Vaughan Mayor David Miller sparred with right wingers Doug Holiday Inn, and Al Palladini Rob Ford Lincoln at the Mississauga Open for Business council chambers at Scotiabank City Hall.
 
Let's just sell naming rights for everything to solve our financial woes. Queen's Park could be Hershey's Park, Union Station to MSNBC Station, Gardiner Expressway to ExxonMobil Expressway (that does have a good ring to it), Toronto Island to PricewaterhouseCoopers Park (aka PWC Park) - hell, Toronto could be sold as ScotiaBank-Ville for the right price per year. Hey, I'll tattoo a corporation's logo on my forehead for 60K a year - so long as it is tasteful.
 
Politics aside, it's unworkable.

What do you do if the sponsor changes name, goes under, or merges? Imagine giving directions where station names change.

"So you get off at Loblaw West, oh wait I think it's PC Food West now, or is it Costco-Loblaws West, or is this the station that's called Daimler-Chrysler West now but used to be Kia Sportage West?"
 
I sure hope this whole idea is meant to enrage the citizens of Toronto and make them protest it and realize how little money we have for transit in this city. Because this is just about the worst idea I ever heard.

ky station (caution slippery floors signs always out)

trojan station (this station should have a glass dome)

astroglide line (why not name entire lines? sounds like a fast and smooth trip)

oscar mayer station (every day is a sausage fest in oscar mayer station)

tampax line (all subway cars on this line are made to look like tampons, the tunnel right before the station will be designed like a vagina and jumpers will be required to wear red) - sorry. that's bad.

hustler station (free reading material here)

LFP square (larry flynt publications) (this will be the most wheelchair accessible station in the system)

viagra station (it's a kiss and ride)

extenze line (the subway line that grows in length every year)

lol, I live in Etobicoke, and yeah the councillors here aRE a bit of a joke, try getting anything done around here, LOL yeah right when pigs fly.....

I think that the stations should not named after a station, but for companies to "adopt" a station, pay for the upkeep for 2 years and for that 2 years the company could have exclusive rights to the station for ads and promotions...

just a thought from the west end of the BD line.....
