Cheaper and faster: a giant cannon to fire passengers across, safely ensconced in large rubber bubbles.

I read this as "a giant cannon to fire giant passengers" and was impressed you accommodated population growth.

They bothered to build a Confederation Bridge between 2 sparsely trafficked and populated areas so maybe a similar bridge can be built across the lake to accommodate trains and of course cars and trucks.

Yes but that bridge replaced a ferry which took who knows how long.. and Confederation bridge is 13 km long. Whereas this outlandish bridge saves maybe an hour off the QEW and would be 50+ km....

The problem with the failed hovercraft crossings was the limited usability, exposure to bad weather, and limited speeds.

With a 50km MagLev line (300 kph) along the floor of Lake Ontario (rather than drilled under it like the Channel Tunnel), you are looking at a 10 minute trip. Have a few passenger cars, then allow vehicles to make up the remainder of the train, you could make a case for being cost effective instead of just a tourist attraction. Get the OLG on board offering "free" tickets to anyone that spends $50 or more in Niagara Falls as a start for funding.

The Channel Tunnel allows private cars for £39 per vehicle and takes 35 minutes.

I'm just guessing here, but I'd think the demand for travel between Britain and France is larger than the demand between Toronto and Buffalo.

As for a lake-floor tunnel, there are huge issues, starting with leakage (not as much of a problem for a dug tunnel), and issues with ship anchors fouling against it (again, see "leakage").

And all of this ignores that maglev is a far-from-proven technology (as far as I know, there is only one major high-speed system in operation, in Shanghai).

Honestly, this seems like a solution in search of a problem.

Just a stretch here ;) but how fast do you think the real-estate would be snapped up if 9,000 sq km of (well below market value) space were to come on the market 10 minutes along a GO line going east or west from downtown Toronto?

10 minutes is barely Mimico or Danforth stations...

We are talking through the roof development here...

I bet few here have any idea how iconic Niagara Falls is in the Orient or South Asia.

Owning a place in the falls with a view?

Priceless...

And the OLG already subsidizes the bus tickets. Last time I went it was a $12.75 return ticket - *** AND *** - they put 10 bucks on your Casino card so really the trip including return is only $2.75 (tax included).

It costs more to take the subway/streetcar to the Bay Street coach station (to catch the subsidized Casino shuttle) than it does to get to and from Niagara!!!

So yeah - this would work!

I'm almost willing to dissect your viewing this through an OLG prism. I mean, there is something kinda "Lotto Max winner's fantasy" about this daffy scheme of yours...

A 300km/h high speed rail is almost impossible to happen in Canada within the next 30 years. Maglev? Only China has the cash and the guts to do it now. Canada, not a chance.

It is almost embarrassing that it takes 5-6 hours to travel between the not so long distance between Canada's two biggest cities. I am surprised that many who drive regularly between them think that time is "fine". It takes less than half of the time to travel the same distance in France or Spain.

really? that's weird because they're building a line in Japan. also please lock this stupid thread.
