And it's interesting to note how little effect on the final result, compared to party strengths in the later polls, Harper and Iggy's last minute "reds under the beds" scaremongering-straight-out-of-the-Republican-playbook had. We've had enough Provincial NDP governments since 1975/77 for the tactic not to work much any more.

At this point, the message may have been more "Raes under the beds" than "reds under the beds" (Bob Rae's present affiliation notwithstanding). And, perhaps, the editorial-cartooning over the daycare-centre-ness of the NDP Quebec caucus stands as affirmation...

On attack ads. People think Harper learned this from the US. He didnt'. He learned from Paul Martin. How quickly people forget the attack ads that Paul Martin used against Harper. They were full of anti-American, anti-military, etc. screed. Remember the one insinuating that Harper was funded by US social conservative groups? Or the one suggesting that Harper was going to fill the cities with troops (with an implied negative conotation to the idea)?

That latter ad is what pushed me to vote Conservative that election. The only time I have. I found it utterly insulting and contemptible that somebody would suggest that somebody like me (a person in uniform) would work to suppress the rights and freedoms that I have sworn to defend.

Go back and look at those ads. Then look at the ads used against Iggy. The ones used against Iggy are mild in comparison.

I was referring to TweedleHarper and TweedleIggy's last ditch attempts to stymie the will of the electorate, by conjuring up antiquated stereotypes of socialist NDP hordes at the gates ... stereotypes that don't work any more. Not about the turnabout fair play of Grit and Tory leaders slapping one another with wet fish every election to make it look as though they represent vastly different interests.
