It's no coincidence that rural America is predominantly religious while urban centres tend to be more secular.
As information becomes more widespread with the help of the internet, more people will be able to decide for themselves what (if any) religion they follow. Simply raising God fearing children is no longer enough.
This goes not only for the US, but for developing nations. I'm sure countries like Iran and China will continue to censor the internet. The same option isn't available in the US.
As I write this: DEMOCRATS GAIN CONTROL OF THE HOUSE!

^^ that's right. Making inexpensive access to the internet should be considered a weapon against ignorance which in itself breeds fanaticism which in turns breeds terrorism against developed nations such as our own and the US where we've seen the results of that ignorance.

Trivia: Nancy Pelosi becomes the first ever female Speaker of the House of Representatives in US history.
Could this be a trend to be followed by Hilary Rodham Clinton becoming the first female President? I hope so. After 8 years of Bushisms, the US is going to need a woman to reconcile with the world community.

I seem to be the only one on UT watching this election (and posting here)... but I'll keep on posting my thoughts as it will be an interesting read later on.
Virginia now belongs to the Democrats! It flipped with 1% of the votes remaining to be counted. If the Dems take this seat in the Senate, they'll only need 2 more out of 4 in contention to win the Senate.

Reading up on the American constitution, I've determined that the House of Representatives can Impeach a President while the Senate leads the trial that decides his/her fate.
So as of now, the Democrats have the power to Impeach Bush. Whether he's escorted out of the White House depends on Virginia and Montana's Senate seat going to the Democrats.

^ It's the safest thing to say when America is so divided. Making impeachment an issue would turn this election into an Impeachment referendum.
Once they're all sitting in their seats, looking at impeaching the President is a very real possibility.

I would also add that impeaching the President leading up to Presidential Election 2008 can be a strategic coup.
Impeaching the President in the next 6 months to 1 year, will expose the innards of the Republican Party to the American people just as campaigning begins.
The Republicans won't stand a chance after facts about the past 8 years surface as a result of impeachment probes.

46 Democrats + 2 Independents (Caucusing with Democrats): 48
Republicans: 49
Control comes down to 3 races: Montana, Missouri, and Virginia
Webb (D) has declared victory in Virginia, but there will be a recount. He seems to have the numbers to maintain his win, though.
McCaskill looks like she will win Missouri, and Tester will win in Montana.
That's 51 for the Democrats, and Senate control.

Yes, Virginia did end up going to the Democrats although the less than 3,000 vote difference will qualify for an automatic recount, thus leaving the balance of power to be decided in a recount for the third consecutive time (2000, 2004, 2006). How can a country be so divided 50-50?
Missouri was going all over the map but with 85% counted, it seems that the Democrats will also take this seat.
Finally, Montana which was thought to go close is showing the opposite. The democratic Senator candidate is leading by a fair margin from the beginning and there seems to be no change in that with a total count approaching.
So yes, the Democrats will control Congress in both the North and South wings of the Capitol.
They can now use that power to win election 2008. The Democrats playing dirty? They better, or the Republicans will shoot them in the back first.
