I walk to work and this is right by my office, so my commutes and lunch hours this week have been quite focused on this site. Cranes arrived Monday, beams showed up yesterday. As of 6pm today the first beam was 2/3 of the way across the ravine, where it had been hanging since noon. Oddly paused installation aside, it's a really cool process to observe.
The beams are precast concrete (as opposed to steel, which I thought was more industry standard) with very thin top flanges. They are crazy thin in all dimensions for how long they are; I'm used to cast-in-place band beams and poorly-poured floor slabs that are rough and beefy, concrete like this feels alien. These things are beautiful to see up close, they have a couple on trucks parked in 102 Ave West of the bridge where you can see them from the sidewalk. Idk, I was needing out over them. There was a lot of testing/QA happening on the beams today prior to install.
Not sure how long it will take to get all of these installed, there's 3 there now and I'm guessing based on the width of the bridge there will be 6 beams total. If it takes a day or so to install each beam, we might only be a week or two away from the ravine being spanned structurally, and the rough size of the final bridge visible.
