Lately Ive been trying to hunt down and go through as many different media sources as possible just seeing what is out there in the world. Im curious as to what others on here read/watch/listen in terms of media. Any thoughts or recommendations on interesting sources? It can be anything, from trade publications to a strange radio station in Peru. Im especially interested in good sources for international news.

Newspapers:

Toronto Star
National Post (aka "Fascist Post")
Ming Pao (my family's favourite Chinese newspaper)

Websites:

Yahoo! News (US and Hong Kong)
Hong Kong Standard website (for news from my homeland)
Architectural Record
Canadian Architect
Wikipedia

Magazines:

National Geographic
Condo Guide

I get my international news from the following...

*BBC
*NY Times
Christian Science Monitor (no, I'm not joking)
Al-Jazeera (to get a different perspective)
The Guardian
Washington Post
CNN (usually the first on the scene)
Google News (a nice compilation from tonnes of sources)

*highly recommended

Favourite columnists:

Thomas Friedman (NY Times)
Maureen Dowd (NY Times)
Bob Herbert (NY Times)
Nicholas Kristof (NY Times)
Eric Margolis (Toronto Sun, though a little over the top)
Ted Rall (also a little over the top)
Robert Scheer (LA Times)

I try to watch CBC, BBC, Jon Stewart for the news.

I read the hard copy of the Globe, either print or web for the Star, Sunday NYT in print, otherwise NYT online.

I also find the "current events" section of SSP highly informative.

I skim glossy ( and not so glossy ) magazines all the time in the stores, but rarely buy them. There are too many to name, even if I remembered the names.

Mostly they're about art, architecture, design, antiques, fashion, style, that sort of thing ... whatever is on display at the time. I glance at the latest fad, or interesting layout, or aesthetically appealing object. Creative photography, typography, illustration, good printing. My eyes feast, soaking things up, grazing.

Often I take the Globe, Star and NY Times home to read in the evening. I cut things out, group them in little clusters, re-read them occasionally, make connections between something from one source with something from another. I ditch them all eventually.

I'm a Globe reader, and the Star on weekends. I love when I find neighbourhood papers in Toronto, for their local perspective. I subscribe to Canadian Geographic, Harper's, Spacing. Peruse architecture magazines on the fly. Spend more time looking at magazines from the 1950's and 1960's than I do current ones, however. Almost never watch TV, but if I see the BBC news I will watch it.

Web is www.kunstler.com, the Onion, here, Spacing, Reading Toronto, and various blogs.

I like Thomas Friedman too. according to him, the world is flat, and any individual, even the ones who post fascinating information like the following, make a huge impact where information is currently software engineered and available to each and every individual.

The playing field has been levelled, because of individual initiatives like the following, according to Thomas friedman.

I get ALL of my news from the Internet, and I get to sample all of the media, as well as all the individual commentary that is just as fascinating, in my opinion.

Christian Science Monitor (no, I'm not joking)

An excellent source of information for in-depth articles about topics that the other papers seem only to skim... good US and Int'l sections. Their articles are also fairly well-balanced and they seem to report emerging trends with a critical eye.

Oh, the Washington Post is also a good newspaper with a good focus on Eastern Europe and Russia.

Has anyone noticed the major ideological shift in Macleans in the last year as much as I have?

Yep. As soon as Ken Whyte (formerly of the Post) was put in charge. The front cover titles like "Svend him Packing" make it quite open and clear.
