*shrug*

I'm fine with it, as long as proper studies are done regarding the affect on the birds which populate the site.

Might make Toronto feel a bit more like Copenhagen:

The spit proper is probably not the best locale for a wind farm due to the migratory route - maybe a bit further offshore?

Studies were done elsewhere regarding birds and the turbines went in anyways.

Might make Toronto feel a bit more like Copenhagen:
I don't actually mind the look of turbines either - there's something soothing about them - but the ones in your pic are about half the size of the ones in use today. Even the one at the CNE is smaller than the massive turbines being propped up at rural wind farms.

That reminds me...the installation of the turbines usually involves a lot of space, both for the base of the turbine itself but also the roads in and out, the space to put the various bits together. I can't quite see how the spit has room for all that.

We pay to get rid of our excess power so it doesn't wreck the grid. Wind power doesn't get stored for later, when it's windy we pay the US and Quebec lots of tax dollars to take that extra power that isn't needed.

I'm glad people like this are 'educating' us against wind power.

Apparently Toronto Hydro tried building some several kilometers off shore in Scarb, but residents resisted. I have no idea what they were complaining about.

They complained about their view being cluttered.

You have to be kidding me. How important do these people think they are. This was several kilometers away.

If I were TO Hydro, I'd build them right outside their backyards out of spite.

It's unfortunate that already local naturalists like Friends of the Spit have been accused of being NIMBYs. I think most Torontonians think of the spit as being nothing more than a dump site. It is clearly an important natural habitat for wildlife and migration route for birds. This isn't your typical NIMBY "WHAT ABOUT OUR PROPERTY VALUES?" group. They should be applauded for their wildlife advocacy.

Wonder what their views are on the nearby gas plant that spews yellow smoke.

BTW, this spit is also an active dump site.

I'm all for wind farms, but not here in a bird sanctuary. The offshore site in Scarborough made most sense, but Scarberians didn't want any of it.
