Wow, what fabulous old buildings. I've never been to Winnipeg but would like to go sometime (perhaps in summer!). Did you enjoy it, Flar? I have heard that for a city its size it has a very lively cultural scene, especially music. I also love The Wekerthans, so there's that.

Summers are very nice in Winnipeg, I was there in the summer about 14 or 15 years ago. Obviously the streets are more vibrant when it's not -20 (as it was when I was there taking these pictures).

I haven't spent enough time in Winnipeg to experience much of its cultural life, though by all accounts it has goods and music scenes. Winnipeg is definitely a gathering place for a wide area, being the only sizable city for hundreds of miles.

Winnipeg,Manitoba: The most isolated large city in North America...

Flar: As usual an excellent photo tour of Winnipeg!

I stopped there for a day back in the Summer of 1990...

I found it quite interesting for a major city that is literally in the middle of nowhere judging by what surrounds it...

This City annexed all its surrounding suburbs and has features like its own City Highway Route Network (pic#13) noteable...

I also will ask about the "frozen tundra" aerial pics-#52 and #88...quite interesting!

Winnipeg has a reputation for having a tough Winter climate...I recall an interesting thing mentioned about SE Manitoba's climate:
"We have 10 months of Winter and two months of mosquitoes"

I am going to chime in on more pics here when time permits...

I was at a convention for five days back in around '96 about mid-May and we had good weather, it was in the high teens/low 20's if I recall. I remember sitting out on patios a few times for meals and it being comfortable. We stayed downtown, they have a small PATH-like network and the streets above were fairly busy but there was a fair amount of closed or boarded up stores at the time which was kind of sad. It's still a rather charming city as shown above, the 'burbs are similar to ours - very unremarkable. A supplier sponsored a 19th century train to haul us all out three hours into the prairies to an entertainment centre one night. The ride out and evening was a blast and the prairies were nice, for about five minutes. I liked Winnipeg though, it seemed to be a nice city overall and really friendly people.

the economic geniuses at city hall approved a parking lot at 416 Main St (Portage and Main) that is now under constructed. not really sure how good it looks to potential investors in the city when some of what should be the most prime real estate in town is being turned into parking..

Sounds like things are happening with the old St Regis Hotel:

from centreventure.com:
Machines have moved on site to begin the demolition of the former St. Regis Hotel in downtown Winnipeg!

CentreVenture has sold the property to Rockport Investment Group Inc. who intends to construct a mixed-use development project including retail, structured parking, office and residential. The project is in the architectural planning stage and is slated to begin construction in 2021.

This redevelopment will join the growing number of projects rising in, and around, downtown's Sport Hospitality and Entertainment District (SHED).
