I suspect this had little to do with insurance and everything to do with that particular situation and facility. Believe me, relatively few people who are coming in to a US psychiatric ER have any kind of insurance, public or private.
Unforgivable, that someone could be admitted on an involuntary basis and then abandoned / neglected. This was a tragic death, and I hope her death raises a ruckus.

Oh, and in response to BrandonTO416: At least in my experience, if you're an American without provable insurance, you'll still be seen at the ER - but you'll likely get bills for the rest of your days on earth...
