Wow, looks like 66 Street will be quite busy this summer.
Yep, it will! They're working on the 66th and 125th leg first, so that it can be used as a detour while they shut down Fort Road to construct (and later demolish) the temporary railway overpasses.

It's not mentioned in this tweet, but the noise reduction system from 97th street to Fort Road is also scheduled to begin this spring. It will also include the construction of a multi-use trail along the Yellowhead up to Fort Road, but the webpage does not specify how far down the Yellowhead it goes and the final design for this project is not on the website. Hopefully it goes down to 97th St as well, because this will be a wonderful amenity for locals and visitors alike!

I was too busy to attend the presentation last night on the upgrades b/w St. Albert Trail and 156 Street. Can anyone fill me in on some of the questions asked and the answers they gave?

Work on on the Fort Road/125th stretch is well underway, and the Hughes gas station is now closed and fenced off. I was wondering when/if that would happen. Some of these pictures show the work, and others are more meant for posterity.

Looks like I actually missed the answer for this on the project page. The new multiuse trail will go from 89th street to Fort Road, while people wanting to walk/bike/whatever between 89th and 97th streets will need to use the existing back alley. Also, the detailed plan for St. Albert Trail to 97th street shows that they'll build a multi-use trail from 142nd street to 107th streets, at which-point users will need to use the sidewalk or road at 124th ave (beside the cemetery), and then use the aforementioned alley which leads to the next multiuse trail. Overall, this isn't ideal - I wish that there'd be one continuous trail for the area. But, at least this will provide safer active connections than what previously existed. If anything, I'm still glad that the city pays attention to active, non-vehicular connections during such a major freeway project. I'm also happy that the trail will start at 142nd street instead of St. Albert Trail, even though that area is technically under the scope of a different sector.

Edit: I just got off the phone with the city planner whose number is in the presentation. He confirmed that the Fort Road-side entrance to the commercial building at Fort Road and 127th Ave won't be closed to accommodate the new shared-use path, because the city didn't want to spend the time and money going to council for approval for the closure. Instead, it's being narrowed from ~9.5' to 7.5' as a compromise. The city is also adding a new crosswalk on the west side of the Fort Road and 66 st. intersection.

Went to get a donair and it is the last business in that little strip mall on the NW corner of 142 st and Yellowhead. Girl said they are closing in about two months. Esso gas station became a big hole in the ground. And McDonald's next to it has been closed for a while.

On the south side between 156 st and 149 st is where the most progress has been made. But they stopped heads on at Costco gas station which is still operational.
And I don't see them building a new one. Are they going to have a gap with fuel service for customers? Sorry for crappy phone zoom pic from 156 st overpass looking East.

Just curious, they're gonna add shoulders on all the stretches of the Yellowhead that currently don't have them, right?

Sorry for the late response, it took a looong time for the presentation to be posted on the city website. I checked it almost daily haha. The video was posted on June 9 apparently, but they marked it as unlisted so you need the link to access it. You can see the entire presentation here:

Tell you one thing, I have massive respect for whoever the PM team is for Standard General on this one. There won't be a more focused on project in Edmonton for the next few years. The public scrutiny and frustration will be massive.

The none efforts at the St Albert Trail exit is frustrating. Its a bottleneck in rush hour now, with westbound 142st and 149st closing, it's going to be far worse later. They need need need dedicated turn around lanes at St Albert Trail.
