There were also issues like the bridges at Hurdman and Bayview being in much worse condition then expected due to 30 years of salt corrosion. I don't mean it was terrible, but the intention 30 years ago was that the transitway was pretty much a lay rail and your done idea. The platforms seemed long enough at the time. Those assumptions turned out wrong decades later, and if the Viva rapidways get converted on a similar 30 year later thing they'll find that it's less convertible than thought too. Seattle also found that out with their downtown tunnel which had rail installed in the 80s but had to be all redone when they actually introduced the link Lrt
Ok, I’ll be looking forward to the 1000m long trains coming to Highway 7.

Oh yeah? How much and what are they spending it on? I thought that the finding is solely for transit no?
The feds announced $11.8B for infrastructure throughout Ontario for the 10 years from 2018 to 2028. Most (not all) of that is earmarked for transit infrastruture:

At this point, the transit portions that have been allocated by municipality are:

Thanks! I wonder what projects will York spend this on. There has not been announcement or anything.

I don’t quite understand what projects you’re looking for announcements for. Do you mean announcements for new funded projects or new planned projects?

Well all projects under construction or planned are funded right? So this funding is new and York Region must have new planned projects to spend on?

^A bit OT, but here's a vid of the construction of the 407. The Yonge St. overpass is at 20:25:

I'm surprised it took a slew of posts before someone commented on that video. It's amazing how hard it is get interest back to a topic once the subject changes.

Thanks for the video! It's absolutely amazing to see what Yonge & Hwy 7 originally looked like compared to today's overpass.

I know this is another crazy fantasy idea, but what if they:
  1. Realign Highway 407 a bit to the south,
  2. Change Highway 7 back to having at-grade intersections at Yonge and at Bayview,
  3. Move the Langstaff Gateway project to north of Highway 407,
  4. Change the municipal boundaries of Richmond Hill and Markham to be the newly at-grade Highway 7,
  5. Extend the Highway 7 Rapidway along Highway 7 (obviously :p), and
  6. Have Langstaff Station in the development rather than right on the edge.

Would be a great idea once the subway is built, but

1) Who would pay for the 407 realignment (the Consortium is probably swimming in money, but they certainly don't wanna pay for it)?
2) What about the Hydro line?

This makes me sad:

Is this something they can direct the new funding towards? Maybe you can apply for a planner job in the Region.

I could be wrong but my understanding is that the developer is paying for the rapidway through Downtown Markham. They'll build it past Birchmount whenever they develop that land.
