The green sand is ballast for the turf. It is coated in Microban to eliminate bacteria growth.

While there were some interesting ideas about integrating the old ramp supports, I'm really glad they did away with them in the end. We don't need eternal reminders of our past terrible urban planning decisions. If someone desperately wants to look at some concrete bents for some reason, they can go a block North anyway.
