On Shuter. Sign is up and "opening soon"

The Shuter Street No Frills is now open - and they're giving away a gift bag (of mostly junk food!) with a purchase. It's a nice, bright store, currently swarming with staff. Unfortunately there's a big pillar right at the checkout section that makes things awkward. Selection is pretty decent, not much in the way of prepared foods. I was there at 8:30 and they definitely had customers. (I had to work hard to not get any employees or customers in these shots!)

I visited the new No Frills on Shuter. I was pretty happy with what I saw. I do feel like they too much of some things, and not enough of other things. It was around 5 pm when I went, and it was super busy. It was kind of annoying to get around with a cart because of how busy it was, plus how crammed the store is. I think once the management gets a feel for what the community is looking for, they will sort out the options available. Maybe they will end up re-arranging things as well at some point. I do think the area near the registers is probably the worst part.

Visited last night. Felt larger than the Esplanade location and definitely not as cramped. Saw there were people complaining about the (lack of) size online but i'm not sure what they're expecting in reality.

I was surprised by the self-checkouts given the store's proximity to Queen & Church, but I suppose that's a sign of how much this area has gentrified in the past few years.

Like Walmart I can see this changing shortly when they realize how bad of an idea it was.

They might be anticipating the crowds will thin out somewhat when the Food Basics opens at Queen and Sherbourne (ish) late this year.
Their target market living to the east of the store might pivot to going to that store instead.

Though I guess there's enough backfill from the new condos at Queen and Dalhousie/Mutual that it won't matter.

Downtown remains under-stored for now.

When you apply the formula for number of people in catchment to store, downtown requires several more stores, and it will get them.

It's needed, for the most part, most well located stores, are insanely busy at peak times. (Farm Boy Sugar Wharf is a notable exception........yikes.....low traffic levels)

We've got March Leo's coming on, Bestco x 2, Oceans plans a downtown store, there's 4-5 more in development, potentially, they won't all pan out.....but I'd be suprised not to see +7 supermarkets vs today by 2029.

Oh it was posted in the construction thread for ROQ City.

There will be a large size Shopper's Drug Mart too on the east side of the building at Ontario Street.

In behind the new No Frills there is also a new unmanned convenience store, similar to what's near Richmond and Parliament.
