It's Lockheed Martin Canada, a US company?

Welcome to the complex world of multinationals. US parent. But they are a distinct branch, with all Canadian employees and obligated to keep intellectual property developed in Canada here. CMS 330 was developed for the Halifax Class by another company they bought. They've developed it and heavily marketed it since then. Most of that billion dollar sale is coming to Canada.

Maybe we should. That's a different discussion from saying we have nothing to offer Europe in the defence sector.

This is a smart move. I don't understand why the Canadian government didn't acquire at least a pair of Bombardier Global Express jets at least a decade before this because they have the required range and speed to be able to replace the Airbus 300/330 on many long-range missions. A good example of this is Carney's last-minute trip to Sharm El-Sheikh Egypt a few weeks ago. That trip reportedly cost almost $800K on the A330.

I am only surprised that this order does not include one or two of the top-of-the-line Global 8000s. The Global 8000 has the highest speed and longest range of any business jet in the world or for that matter any passenger jet. It is the pinnacle of Canadian aviation achievement that we should be showing off to the world.

According to the article the Bombardier Global jets will be delivered in the summer of 2027 but will not attain full operational capability until the end of that year. I don't understand this. It should be possible to get existing Challenger pilots' type-rated for the Global jets long before they are delivered. There is no reason why the jets should not be fully operational on the first day of delivery.

Just last week Bombardier celebrated the first entry into service of the Global 8000 - the world's fastest passenger plane (during flight testing it flew supersonic!)

I agree. Bombardier has the capability of producing a fighter jet. They designed and built the most advanced business jet. The designed and built the most advanced single aisle airliner the C-Series. Sadly, they were forced to sell the program to Airbus for $1 as a result of Trump's 300%+ tariffs on the aircraft.

I would also like to see Bombardier and other Canadian companies e.g. DeHavilland get into the drone business as well. Canada has a huge need for 10,000s of drones of all varieties and missiles! Especially air-defense missiles. We have the talent and technology in Canada to be producing these weapon systems. Eventually Canada could become a major exporter of defense systems.

Except the US won't like that and will try to kill any of that potential...

I don't think Bombardier is going to achieve scale selling a combat aircraft. Perhaps they, through Canada, could participate in some of the joint venture projects for 6th gen fighters.

Even if they did, it doesn't solve our current dilemma. The CF-18s are now 40 years old. Assembling somebody else's aircraft for our relatively small market doesn't seem all that viable, and getting into the game as a clean sheet development, you would be looking at a minimum 10 years. The F-35 was about 15 years in development and that's by a company that was already in the fat jete business.

Never is a long time, but I don't see Bombardier (or any other Canadian company) getting into the clean sheet fighter business in our lifetimes.

An assertion made by someone who has no experience in aerospace manufacturing or fighter jet operations.

As somebody who has that experience. No they don't. And they won't have it in 5 years. Or even 10 years. That's the reason the only thing they can offer Saab is hangar space and lobbying support.

The Global 6500 is a fantastic platform. It's actually the default for the US Army' s surveillance fleet. However, Bombardier doesn't do any integration on any of the special mission aircraft they sell. It's always, L3, Sierra Nevada, Saab, etc. They just don't have the expertise.
