Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said immigration will be a key topic in her address to the province on Feb. 19 at 6:45pm, one week before the UCP government tables its budget. Smith said the province faces pressures from decreased oil revenues and increased costs of covering services for a rapidly growing population, and wants Alberta to have more control over immigration, similar to Quebec’s 1991 accord with Canada. “I would like to see a newcomer have a job when they arrive,” Smith said.

UCP became garbage long ago.

Alberta has no control over immigration. This is a nothing speech.

Looks like immigrants are going to be falsely blamed for Smith's total failures as a leader.

If she can no longer blame Trudeau, that bully woman will find another target.

So hurtful.
Doesn't matter who is in Ottawa, She will fight anyone. Hell she probably would fight Harper.

Provinces in Canada, such as Alberta and others, actively select immigrants through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) to fill local labour market shortages and drive economic growth. While provinces nominate candidates, the federal government makes final decisions. Due to rapid population growth, some provinces like Alberta are reassessing, aiming to align immigration more closely with economic needs.

So does that "job" include having grandma come to look after the kids or does she just mean paid work? Just asking

The questions are also very loaded. This is designed to provide cover and a "mandate" to implement a white christian nationalist agenda and further separatist goals.

The about-face on immigration may also be a signal that jobs are expected to flee the province. They'll claim that no one could have seen it coming because this was different than every other time separatism chased all of the money out of a jurisdiction.

Spanky McAllister said as much just the other day.

Smith wants (or wanted) Red Deer to get to 1,000,000 residents. I guess she meant only old stock Albertans need apply. The speech was full of racist talking points. The referendum question regarding voter ID was taken right from the MAGA playbook. I’m sure Take Back Alberta was pleased with their premier.
