You know what, this is the kind of thing that will enrage him more than anything else. Gas is over $4 a gallon, Iran called his bluff and has him by the balls, airports are a complete clusterfuck, western leaders have stopped playing his game, but losing his legacy projects will destroy him. He knows he's got little time left and every narcissistic cell in his body is terrified of being forgotten. He desperately wants monuments built for him and this was his most important monument because he knows the White House has been there for centuries and will likely be there for many more and he wants to be a part of that. He has 9 months to make this irreversible because once the Democrats have at least one chamber of Congress, they can gum up the gears to slow this down beyond his term.

So, to summarize:
He berates allies.
He tariffs allies and trading partners
He claims the UN is a waste of money
He says NATO members are unreliable, even though the only time the mutual defence article was invoked was by the US
He said he didn't need any help in his Iraq 'special military adventure
He didn't seek any kind of international consensus
In addition, he fails to recognize that NATO is a mutual self-defence alliance, not a cheering section for US exceptionalism adventures.
