Or maybe you could find them and share?

There was a recent report that I believe showed the number of complaints by ward. You could dig that up, and while you're at it, see if you can't find something on the safety record of the city-owned trucks (comparable to the recent GFL rating issue).

For all the armchair psychology and idle speculation on this board, the most enjoyable posters also put forward arguments backed up by facts and supporting links.

Found it buried in a Star article:

"The city’s own overall violation rate is 55.8per cent."

That seems remarkably high, too.

It does. And it's still 20+ points safer than GFL. Here you go...

$25

Without checking, I'll bet you $5.00 the Toronto trucks collectively have a way better safety rating than the GFL trucks... I'll even spot you 20 points to even...
You can donate the five bucks to Socknaki.

If you make it $25 it will qualify for the rebate. (ETA: Oh, well done, polluted.)

There is no singing allowed as it is a workplace. He is VERY loud and I'm not surprised he was told to keep it down. I don't have a problem with freedom of speech but I have a problem with bullshit and his comments about being stalked by The Star and CP24 are untrue. Let's not even get into "someone shoved the pipe in his hands". Kool aid has been consumed in large quantities here.

He told the sit-in (the OTHER one!) that he was born in 1933. Not sure about anything else about him but hey, if he has $200 to spend on this, go for it!

Aside-if you pull out of the race do you get your money back?

One thing about Ford's apparent popularity/success over his term: it has a way of "overlegitimizing" vocal supporters who, in fact, happen to be unelectable nutbar fringers. (Another case in point: Smitherman's brother.)

The problem here is trusting the "stats". I've had major problems with GFL and complained weekly to 311, the city and DMW directly for over a year to get them to stop driving the wrong way down my one way street (a one way street with both a school and a daycare on it - the trucks coming through right as kids were going to class). I'm not even sure if they have stopped - I now leave for work before the truck picking up my garbage comes (although dozens of trucks still use this quiet one way street as a shortcut to avoid a signalled intersection - something the city never did).
Anyhow, sometimes I got a reference number for a complaint, sometimes not. 311 was always courteous and professional - but I never got an explanation why I would get a reference number only some of the time and they refused to give me any contact info. for management - only assurances that the complaints were being forwarded. I was often ignored by DMW (he even accused me of not living where I do because when it comes to his baby GFL he truly sees/hears no evil!).

I searched the Toronto Star archives for the 1954 Lake Ontario swim.

Lots on Marilyn Bell, but I saw nothing about "Douglas Ford" or "Doug Ford". Not saying it's not true, but I couldn't find any evidence of it in the Star's 1954 online archives.

Also, if DoFo Sr. was born in 1933 ( according to Wikipedia ), that would have made him 19 in 1954.

I took it as Marilyn had an escort of swimmers for the first leg of the journey - people who never intended to complete the crossing (sort of like a pacer). Over time the story may have sprouted a few fins, but if doug sr was a strong swimmer and a member of Marilyn's club then it's certainly possible.

It's worth noting that Ms. Bell is still alive - someone could always, you know, just ask her.

As far as GFL is concerned, and this is anecdotal for sure, service in our west-end, Wednesday pick-up is mostly a get-er-done kind of affair. So an 'S' on that. However, driving the wrong way on one-ways in school zones is a bit of concern. Speed, too. And where the city guys managed to create a degree of traffic flow, even on narrow streets, GFL creates 20 car honkers wherever they are. The dudes don't give a shit, though. The well-gloved middle finger is pretty common. So, yeah, Fordian 'customer-service' at its finest.

Let's enumerate, then: Unsafe and understaffed trucks peopled with surly, underpaid employees driving at high-speeds against one-way streets when they're not causing angry urban traffic snarls which emanate relentless impatient honking = Single Policy Victory! Winning!

In researching this (see my earlier post re the appeal), I was astonished to learn that a company can have a safety violation rate of 70% and still be rated "satisfactory." According to Can LII, "there are five safety ratings: (1) Excellent; (2) Satisfactory; (3) Satisfactory Unaudited; (4) Conditional; and (5) Unsatisfactory." So GFL was just shy of scraping the barrel bottom at "conditional". At 70%, they would have scraped by as "satisfactory" (unaudited).

Driving every day through residential streets, in school zones, past seniors' homes...

Thanks, Rob. Great benefit to the city. You're a true leader.

what percentage would have to be achieved to get a rating of "excellent"? (just curious)

LMGTFY.

http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/trucks/guideline/carrier.shtml

"A carrier would normally be eligible for an Excellent Safety Rating if it meets all of the following conditions:

  • The carrier has at least 24 months of demonstrated operation in Ontario and currently holds a valid CVOR certificate,
  • The carrier has an overall violation rate of 15% or less of overall threshold,
  • The carrier also has a collision violation rate of 10% or less of the collision threshold, and
  • The carrier has been audited and achieved an excellent score."
