"Former mayoral candidate Doug Ford will get $35,132 in severance for his four years on council. He donated his councillor salary over the last four years and vowed to do the same with any severance."

“I’ll take it and donate it,” Ford said.

I'm entirely sure Doug donated his salary and such... wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

The question I think needs be answered is what is happening with the "Rob Ford Football Foundation". The website is still there but Robbie has been out of the football business for a while so what is happening with the money?

I won't click on a Sun link, but did they say where he donated it to? Or like usual, they just make a statement and we're supposed to believe it with no evidence.

And if he did donate it all (which I don't for a minute believe), he has scored himself a nice tax break. But hey, it's all for the people, right?

He may indeed donate his salary to charity, but we know he didn't donate it back to the city, because he is on the Sunshine List.

2013 Salary paid: $104,105.98 Taxable benefits: $778.71

Incidentally the Sun report is from Don Peat, City Hall Bureau chief.

He could have simply done this for the last four years:

"Members cannot refuse to receive remuneration from the City, but can choose to donate a portion of their salary (after deductions) back to the City."

This is not to say he has not donated his salary to charity, but without receipts it's impossible to verify.

If it's Doug's salary to donate, how would giving it back to the City necessarily keep him off the Sunshine List?

(Wash in warm water, on the delicate cycle and rinse in cold, with a gentle spin. Hang to dry. No Bleach.) ?

This could be the out that the pcpo needs-they could insist on seeing his financial statements as part of the leadership application process. If it turns out he lied about the donations it would sink him.

The Sunshine List says, "Salary Paid".

At any rate, it does not appear that the intent was ever to donate his salary to the city, preferring instead to donate it to "different community organizations".

QUOTE from four years ago:

Don Peat October 26, 2010

Doug Ford to donate salary to charities

Just one day after he was elected to his brother's former council seat, Ford vowed he will donate his entire councillor salary of around $100,000 to community organizations during his entire four-year term.

"I'm going to donate it back into the community and different community organizations," Ford said Tuesday. "When Rob asked me to get involved I told him pretty clearly that I'm not going to be down there for a position or a paycheque."

Ford said he hasn't settled on the groups he would donate to yet but he said he is looking for organizations that can leverage the support.

"When I was door knocking, I was up in Rexdale, I was going into government housing...I thought, 'Man, there (are) so many people that need support,'" Ford said.

LORINC: Should Doug Ford prove he’s donated four years of salary to charity?

"Now take the case of John Tory’s frequent claims to have been a fundraiser for various charities. Whatever else you think about his motivations, those statements are readily verified by third parties, including the City of Toronto itself. His corporate salary and benefits, moreover, are also subject to public disclosure [PDF], and thus available to voters and investors alike."

It wouldn't. He is paid his salary. Apparently he can't refuse it. It is then up to him what he does with it. He could make a donation to city coffers, but that wouldn't change the fact that he is on the Sunshine List.

Doug would be the very first person to brag about where he donated his salary over the years (and try and win those votes)... therefore, we all know he hasn't donated a cent.
Or, maybe he donates it to poor, destitute Randy who can't afford his child support payments.

If the salary is not paid, ie: direct deposited into the councillor's bank account, why would it be recorded as "Salary Paid" on the Sunshine List?

He made it clear that he will accept his salary, and donate it privately to charities of his choice:

"Ford said he hasn't settled on the groups he would donate to yet but he said he is looking for organizations that can leverage the support."

Exactly. He clearly donated the vast majority office salary to himself.

But it is paid. And then it is donated back. It has to be recorded as paid in order to issue a T4. So, because it's paid, it gets included with the Sunshine List.
