    Unbuilt Toronto 2

Although I had posted here that it would be free, I have found out, unfortunately, that the ROM will be charging for my Unbuilt Toronto talk on November 23. It had been listed as free in their "Let's ROM" booklet, but they have updated their website now to say that this was an error. They are...

Those are very cool. The Harbour City Phase 1 image is actually of the full proposal for Harbour Square. It's shown (and I mention it) in the Harbour City aerial at Fig. 7-4 in the first Unbuilt Toronto book. The original plan for Harbour City (when the Harbour Commission was proposing it...

There's no charge for the ROM talk, and you don't have to pay ROM admission. You have to enter at the south end of the building, however, near the planetarium (the President's Choice Group Entrance). I think that Eaton's pre-WWI Carlton Street plans were as impressive, in their own way, as...

    Unbuilt Toronto 2

Filip, I'm glad you enjoyed the book. As of this week it's in the stores. You are right that with the first book there was a checklist of certain projects that I had to deal with because they were known. But with this book, I didn't have that limitation, and I was able to follow some really...

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Before excavating for the site of Commerce Court in 1969, the Bank of Commerce did an archaeological dig supervised by the provincial government, Mt Pleasant Cemetery and the Anglican Church. Allegedly a grave-sized plot had never been conveyed by John Vanzant, the owenr of the surrounding three...

Sorry, I meant they were on the demolished Bank of Montreal building.

They were on this building. Margaret and Marilyn McKelvey talk about them in the book Toronto: Carved in Stone. The figures representing the provinces were in the entrance alcoves -- you can see them poking up above the hoarding. The curved lintels above the entrances had Canadian animals...

    Toronto Toronto | Aura at College Park | 271.87m | 78s | Canderel | Graziani + Corazza

It seems that the buildings that went up during this period on the lands sold by Eaton's as surplus were uniformly done in limestone, the notable exception being Maple Leaf Gardens (which has limestone trim). Even the two little buildings that still stand on what was surplus Eaton's lands at the...

    Unbuilt Toronto projects on Sketchup

I agree, this would have been nice. With the (unbuilt) Toronto Towers project just to the west, and of course with the Bank of Commerce across the street, this stretch of King would have been something.

That's amazing Archivist. I've been researching a proposal during this period by CNR for a tower on the northwest corner of King and Yonge. At one point Eustace Bird was announced as architect. It would be interesting to know if this was his work. I have never seen this image.

Help Spacing compile Toronto clock tower list

I added the Etobicoke Civic Centre and also Elmesley Hall at St Michael's College. The latter I think is a neat story, since a clock was planned for the tower (which conceals a now-decommissioned smoke stack) but not installed until last year, 50 years later. I like that you can see the...

    Wittington Place (Moshe Safdie)

I wouldn't mind a hardcover copy for my personal collection either! But no, I don't think the publisher has any plans for that.

    Wittington Place (Moshe Safdie)

I think that's right Archivist -- this may have been a particularly big flicker. Thanks for the tips on the sources.

Wylie, it was in fact your mentioning of the Weston Skyscraper that got me interested in researching that location (it's Mark here) -- thanks for that. There were some pretty significant proposals there it seems, so I'm hoping to be able to flesh out the history.
