Project 2025 (the unacknowledged Trump agenda by the GOP policy-wing the Heritage Foundation) calls for making it illegal to mail the 'abortion pill' across state lines or even medical equipment used for same. They would love to pass a national abortion ban. Expect the crazies in the GOP House that control the balance of power to demand it.

Honestly, at this point, Americans deserve what is coming. Including women in a lot of red and swing states who voted for this. They really need to get the full version of the government they voted for.

The risk of these policies need to be made obvious to all. It's the only way they'll learn. Some people have to touch the hot stove.

When deportations skyrocket inflation in a full employment (4% unemployment) economy, reinforced by tariffs and trade wars, some will learn.

The pro-Palestine crowd who called Biden "Genocide Joe" may have some regrets when Netanyahu is actually unleashed in January. Some will learn. Some will keep blaming Democrats. And now nobody should ever take them seriously again. And nobody will as Americans deal with a multitude of other issues.

Women will be facing everything from abortion bans to serving women losing military funding for flying to blue states. As women start dropping out of serving, as maternal deaths skyrocket, they'll have nobody to blame. Twice they let a rapist and misogynist get elected over a woman.

Minorities are the most stunning of them all. Trump winning half of all Latino men, despite his last administration accidentally deporting actual American citizens is well...I don't have a word. So many of them think they won't accidentally get caught up in the racism.

I was up for another exchange posting in the US. Decided to pull it. I lived there for half of the first Trump administration. I didn't feel great in California when my of my Hispanic American Navy colleagues ended up in a tussle with a cop while out walking his dog. I can't imagine being a person of colour in Colorado or Alabama on this posting. Most of all, I would fear for my wife and kids. The wife already worried about school shooting. The election results cemented my decision.

It is going to be pure 'I never thought leopards would eat MY face!'

I'm here for it. The pain has to be high enough. That's the only way the fever breaks and Trump loses popularity. There's way too many people there who don't think there's any consequences for them. Latinos who don't think they'll get deported. Women who don't think their care will get impacted. Rural voters who don't think sanctions will impact them. Millions who don't understand herd immunity against long dead diseases like polio. Millions more are going to discover what "pre-existing conditions" means when the Affordable Care Act gets repealed.

Heck, Flint voted for Trump. The place that had poisoned water coming from their taps. Dearborn with all the Arab Americans apparently forgot the Muslim Ban. New Jersey nearly went red at 47% because so many minorities there hate trans. While I think the Democrats are completely out of touch with the more right leaning America, all of this is bordering on over the top.

At this point, just grab the popcorn and watch people learning lessons.

But but... Democrats.. Sleepy Joe....

Seriously though I don't feel sorry for them. Americans knew what they were getting when they voted Trump back in.

The sad part is they won't learn anything and will still vote for anyone holding a bible screaming freedom for only those whose family is descended from the Plymouth Rock settlers.

The US isn't a democracy anymore. In my opinion it's a theocracy almost like Iran mixed with a bit of Nazi Germany.

The only difference between Iran and the US is that this is a Capitalist Theocracy where religion rules the day.

The similarity to Germany lies in the desire for pure-blooded Americans to take priority. They also want to deport people they seen as undesireable (Latinos).

Republicans have not won this high a share of Hispanic and African American votes in decades or ever in some cases. It's not just white votes.

I have lots of concerns about what a Trump second term will look like and don't wish to diminish those at all.

But I do wish to mention the law of unintended consequences and how things rarely look in practice as you thought they might.

Lets take Roe V. Wade being overturned.

Understanding that I'm pro-choice and disagree w/the ruling......its important to note that abortions in the U.S. are actually up 20% since 2022 when that ruling came out.
So whether you're pro-choice or anti-choice, you probably didn't get what you expected or wanted.

It is absolutely true that women, particularly low income women in states with comprehensive abortion bans are either bringing unwanted pregnancies to term, or facing incredible hardship going out of state to procure one etc......
But equally true than more affluent women either travel with relative ease and/or are going the pill route.

******

I expect one will find the same on the mass deportation file. I think one would be naive not to expect some material action on that promise, some of which will be profoundly unjust and will have all sorts of knock-on effects.

(Examples of knock-on effects include fleeing people who may head out of the U.S. on their own, possibly south or possibly north; lots middle class/affluent homes suddenly losing their nanny/gardener etc etc; and rising costs/inflation for many goods and services, especially food, childcare, construction, and landscaping. Meanwhile, should the U.S. population actually contract, housing may become more affordable, but people may also find themselves under water on mortgages if values contract too much.)

Finally, I had a talk w/someone who should know and I asked "What is the capacity of the U.S. government to carry out deportations under maximum effort? I was told 1 to 1.5M per year.
If true..........compare that to the ~12M 'illegals' and those whose hopes and dreams rest on inflicting misery to others may yet find themselves disappointed as well.

I'm also hearing from someone likely to have an appointment in the new government, that public rhetoric to the contrary, there will be a proposal to massively jack the number of H1B and H2A (seasonal agricultural worker) visas.

We'll have to see how it all unfolds. I expect a great deal of chaos any which way, as that is a Trump specialty.

A lot of this is because abortion pills are accessible by mail. But the troglodytes are about to find ways to stop this trade.

Nobody will care about the second order effects till they legitimately become serious. Florida has a shortage of orange pickers. Has not moderated their stance on immigration at all. It needs to be across many more sectors.

Taking 1.5M out of a 170M person workforce at 4% unemployment is not inconsequential. The economic effects would be immediate. Given their skills in sectors like agriculture and construction, if it's overdone they could legitimately risk famine and housing shortage.

When I was in California, as part of being on exchange I had to take an American civics class (mandatory for military officers on exchange). Our prof (ex -Army Colonel) took us out to an artichoke farm in California. He explained how illegal immigration works with agricultural workers, the risks they face, etc. But one of the things that blew my mind? Their skill. They specialized by crop. And they knew how to pick according to forecast ripeness for the market being shipped to, based on shipping times. The idea that this can be replaced by some average white college students working a summer job is beyond ignorant.

I'm also hearing from someone likely to have an appointment in the new government, that public rhetoric to the contrary, there will be a proposal to massively jack the number of H1B and H2A (seasonal agricultural worker) visas.

I'll take this bet. Guys like Stephen Miller are absolutely racist. They've been complaining about too many Indians in tech. And you think they are going to legalize millions more. I'd say colleague is coping and hoping the worst isn't likely to be true. Meanwhile Miller is out there literally bragging that he is going to be stripping citizenship.

I don't usually splash in online political discourse puddles but, in the end, the US voters elected who they wanted and get to live with the results. It was the Democrat's election to lose and they didn't bring their A game.

I'm not a fan of Trump, or anyone who's leadership style is to attempt to unite people by dividing them. I'm more concerned about those who will now feel empowered by him; both those who will actually be empowered in his administration but also those who will view themselves as 'fellow travellers' and take it upon themselves to help 'make America great again'.

If his state felony convictions survive appeal, it's going to make any international travel a little awkward for his handlers.

Agreed w/all of the above.

That's not what I said, I said someone likely to be appointed by the new administration says that's being discussed.

That person is not my bestie, but nor am I being fed talking points. That it is being discussed does not mean it will happen.

I'm simply reporting what's being shared with me, I do so w/o personally affirming its likelihood.

This has been my concern since Day 1. Those who share his racist, misogynistic , ableist and generally fear and hate filled views become emboldened.

I don’t find those abortion numbers surprising. Those with means have options. Those without don’t (well, they do, but those options have become illegal and less safe). So along with the general degrading of individual rights which is a huge overarching component of anything related to laws around abortion, and the slippery slope that accompanies it, it further speaks to the huge socioeconomic disparities in the US. Those who have will continue to prosper and those who don’t will continue to struggle., probably more so, and those seen as “the other” will be further ostracized.
