so, danielle wants to be elected premier of the province of alberta based on her promise to enact a clearly unconstitutional - and potentially illegal - sovereignty act.

it is the very cornerstone of her campaign. but it’s somehow “premature, ill-informed and disrespectful” for the current premier - not that i’m a fan of the current premier either - to even comment on it?

would danielle think the same thing of kenney’s comments if he had agreed with her and supported enacting this legislation? somehow i think not.

i don’t know what alternative universe smith is trying to emulate in alberta but i for one hope she doesn’t get the opportunity.

Absolutely agree with you.

^^

i see she's announced another cornerstone.

https://edmontonjournal.com/news/lo...suggests-firing-ahs-board-in-leadership-forum

so not only does she want to be able to disobey those above her whom she chooses to disagree with, she now wants to fire those below her whom she chooses to disagree with.

i suppose there's something to be said for consistency but that's not democracy, that's anarchy.

or maybe she doesn't understand the difference between anarchy and monarchy and thinks she's running to be a queen, all hail the queen?

If or when Smith takes the reigns of the UCP sparks will fly. I cannot imagine the party functioning for any amount of time.

I hope so, but the trend around the world seems to be for the party to fall in line when the crazies take over. Maybe Alberta can buck the trend, but I doubt it.

The feds announced $2B yesterday for housing which will result in 17,000 units across Canada.

The province announced its anticipated budget surplus of $550M is now $13.2B. While I am not opposed to using some of that to pay down debt, imagine using just $1B of it for supportive housing in Alberta and the services to go with it.

It would have a ripple effect on so many other areas - from healthcare and policing to the entire economy which would benefit not to mention the humanitarian thing to do.

It will be nice but I don't see that happening. The money will never get to where it is needed. We have these new supportive living facilities opening but the AoG said there was no money for the services. I expect to see further reduction of O&G taxes. (it is socialist if it goes down not up). There is a new hospital needed in Edmonton but that will not get announced for 8 more months.
I do see some Ralph Buck (Kenny Dollars) coming for every person in the province probably in the next month. A going away gift from Kenny.

Those Kenny Dollars are going to cost at least 2.2 billion based on a population of 4.4 million @ $500 each. The Ralph Bucks were a terrible idea then and still are now. What a waste if it happens.

they're pretty much in a no-win situation and that probably won't get them out of it.

it will be hard for them to try and paint notley's ndp as no good spend thrifts after she gave us four years of pretty decent fiscal management in pretty tough times while they're pi$$ing billions up a rope in good times just as they did in bad times.

You are making a rational point that makes sense but a lot of UCP followers and supporters are not rational thinkers and will twist just about anything to f**k Notley and the NDPs. A real Trumpian style.

Remember that Notley was in effect the one who pushed for and supported pipeline development in the province, but you'd never hear that from UCP supporters.

there are 124,000 ucp members but there are close to 2,000,000 registered voters in the province of alberta.

if you consider the last election a landslide for the ucp at 63 out of 87 seats, you need to temper that with the fact they got less than 55% of the total votes cast.

one of the things that is likely going to be the same as the last election is that the electorate was unhappy with the ndp (or more accurately unhappy with world economics and their impact on alberta).

my guess is that this time around the electorate is even more unhappy with the incumbents than they were 4 years ago, particularly after finding out that the emperor in waiting and his team weren't wearing any clothes. this is probably compounded by the fact that even within the incumbent party there is a large faction that is unhappy today and won't be any happier come election time regardless of who they select as their new leader.

I see a minority govern at best. The scary part is the UCP can take the win because there is a lot of media on their side that people are listening to. People that complain right now may not be voting because they don't see the NDP as friendly to Alberta Ideals.

I also feel that the voter turnout will be even lower than last time which will favor the UCP. I agree with Ken in that there is a large group in Alberta that will always vote what ever the conservative flavor is. Funny thing is Notley was raised in Rural Alberta and probably has the best understanding of Alberta in general that the current crop of UCPers.

It pisses my off that they Have a good chance of taking power and turning Alberta further into Texas of the north. I fear for my retirement, my health care if having to pay for it directly will suffer. Meds needed will be forgotten. I watched how much we were going through financially when both my parents were in care homes, I don't look forward to what is to come.

The NDP lost the last election simply because the two right wing parties united. It will be interesting to see if they can win based on the displeasure of the electorate with the UCP and on their own merit. Here’s hoping
