No one actually said visitors to the conference were using slave labour. However, Middle eastern countries like Dubai do have a reputation for treating their foreign workers badly, not respecting their rights and the rights of others. There are a number of publicized cases where they have been treated like slaves.

For a number of reasons, including this, it really was not a good idea to choose to hold a international climate conference in a place like this.

Minister Gilbeault commented on this today saying it's a United Nations decision to hold this conference in different regions around the world and then a country submits its interest from a particular region and sometimes its just one country interested and sometimes it's more and a choice has to be made.

He noted that climate change is largely a fossil fuel problem and hosting it in a country similar to Canada that is a major fossil fuels producer is good in that these countries, like us, have to be part of the solution and it seems they are interested in that.

I can only go by what the poster wrote. The object of the sentence was "some people at a climate conference."

Anyway, if the contention is that we are above reproach on the topic of climate change because other jurisdictions have poor human rights records, then I can't get on board with that.

I believe at the time annexation was happening. Refinery row was not part. Strathcona county had a big say in how that was lopped off. Also why Sherwood park is not a city. If they were they would loose the revenue.

Maybe a combination of Getty and Klien.

If this was during the 1982 annexation when we got a large chunk of the northeast from Sturgeon County, then that would've been during the Lougheed Government, before Getty or Klein's times.
