However, Marc Lalonde, the Minister of Energy Mines and Resources whose department oversaw development of the NEP would later say in 1986: "The major factor behind the NEP wasn't Canadianization or getting more from the industry or even self sufficiency," [...] "The determinant factor was the fiscal imbalance between the provinces and the federal government [...] "Our proposal was to increase Ottawa's share appreciably, so that the share of the producing provinces would decline significantly and the industry's share would decline somewhat."[21]

Revisionist history.
Yes it always has been. Unfortunately, shortly after the NEP was implemented world oil prices fell dramatically. Many people here blamed Trudeau and the Liberals for the subsequent economic slowdown.

However, this was really industry wide, world wide. The economy in Texas and other places where oil was driving the economy also slowed down dramatically and suffered too.

That is correct but for Alberta it was a double whammy first the NEP and then the collapse in energy prices. Took a lot longer to recover because of that. The collapse in oil prices was easier to deal with because they always have a way of correcting themselves but arbitrarily government policy imposed by by people who had little to no representation in western Canada was demoralizing because you never knew if and when it would ever end.

Looks like an update soon on provincial rail and service to airports.

"Dreeshen says it aims to include proponents for a high-speed rail line between Edmonton and Calgary and to connect the two cities and their international airports."

WCS price

Remind me again, what did Saddlebags and her merry band of idiots budget 2026 again? Was it $64.barrel? Bottom line, Captain Obvious here but the longer the war goes on, the better she’ll look….heck we might even get a new hospital quicker…..

Actually the government changed a while after, so the NEP was gone but low oil prices lingered for a number of years after that which was probably the main reason slow recovery. However its very hard to challenge mythology once it becomes set in collective minds.

I think UCP people hate solar, wind or any other alternative forms of energy, so they’ll have to cheat by driving with purple gas.

Are you suggesting the NEP had no impact and low oil prices did. Because if that is the case that is a myth.
