The financial backers in this outlandish project are a point of interest... The Benquesus family, owners of the Toledo company, also financed the construction of the ornate Sephardic Kehillah Centre, directly North of the Alvear Palace Condominium at Bathurst and Steeles.

This family is rumoured in the Sephardic community to have made their money in organized crime and mafia activities. The condo, which was built on spec and still largely unsold, is home to the Benquesus family, where they reside in the entire penthouse floor that is supposed to have an indoor pool.

It will be interesting to see where they will find 350 million dollars, and if they will be able to do so without the proper authorities intervening first.

"In 2006, Beachfront Developments paid $3.6 million for The Dardanella. The same day, according to government records, Beachfront acquired a $5.4-million mortgage on the property."

who was the lawyer and lender on that closed that transaction? someone's not doing their job.

Thanks for the pics, but it appears that the initial redevelopment will only harm Wasaga's reputation with developments that are sooooo craptacular.

I have always felt that Cape Cod style wooden structures would be perfect for downtown Wasaga....although I guess that would be faux Cape Cod, eh? ;)

Two video reports from A-Channel news:

A 350 million dollar redevelopment of Wasaga beach is coming. Chris Lesage got a sneak peak at what the beachfront will look like five years down the road. And as we hear from him, something is missing from the plans:

It's a race against time in Wasaga Beach. Six months after a devastating fire, residents and businesses spent this weekend getting ready for the upcoming long weekend. Rob Cooper has the story:

Wasaga Hosts Canada's First Geodesic Event Dome

Special to the National Post
Published: Saturday, June 28, 2008

The world's longest freshwater beach has a new claim to fame. Wasaga Beach is now home to Canada's first --and one of the planet's largest --geodesic event domes.

WasagaDome opens this summer featuring blockbuster movies, live comedy and a five-week run of Ignite, Zero Gravity Circus' latest production.

"This dome is the only one of its kind in Canada and will be visible from across all of southern Georgian Bay," says Dave McKay, operations manager of WasagaDome. The dome features unobstructed sightlines for all of its 1,000 seats, and no seat is more than 10 rows from the action.

Creative director Eli Chornenki has put together an outstanding first season for WasagaDome. Absolute Comedy runs Thursday evenings starting July 17 through August. The Second City Touring Company is performing four shows, July 18, 19, 25 and 26.

However, Mr. Chornenki is most excited about presenting the circus, explaining, "I first saw these domes a few years ago and was so excited. Circus is designed to be experienced in the round." Circus…circle -- see the connection?

Zero Gravity Circus' debut of their newest show Ignite takes full advantage of the amazing venue, bringing top circus performers from around the world to the ring from Aug. 1 through Sept. 1.

Ignite features aerialists, fire artists, wire walkers and more, performing just steps away from the surf and sand that first made Wasaga famous.
