Some 1,200 city workers went on strike in Brampton on Thursday, with major disruptions to some key municipal services expected.

The workers, represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 831, walked off the job in the early morning hours after contract negotiations with the city failed to reach a new deal.

The employees on strike include those responsible for public transit, parks and recreation, road maintenance, animal control, courthouse services, bylaw enforcement, and building inspections and permits.

Brampton Transit operators are represented by ATU. Presumably CUPE represents office administration and terminal agents (three terminals have BT customer service staff), and they’re picketing.

Apparently multiple routes did not operate today at all. A friend waited 1hour for the 30 Airport around 5pm and nothing showed up.

Which routes aren’t operating? Well, BT won’t tell you. Completely useless website and social media presence. There is no official statement on what routes are operating and which are not. Unacceptable from a public agency. Show’s complete disconnect and disdain of City officials towards the transit users in Brampton.

ATU 1573 isn't on strike, but they're standing in solidarity of the picket lines.

The social media and website people are probably CUPE. Still, you’d think a manager could provide basic information.

Striking workers aside, here's an update on the Chinguacousy Zum. These photos are from the northbound lanes of Chinguacousy facing Bovaird Drive.

The formwork to the right will be the location of the major constrained Zum shelter, while the pathway to the left will be paved over and treated as a multi-use cycle/pedestrian path, with a killstrip on the section closest to the road.

As for the other stops, they've been doing a lot of directional drilling and excavation to run utilities. As part of the paving of multi-use paths and directional drilling, they will be adding traffic signalling for cyclists as well.
