I don't live in Scarborough, and won't use the line. It would be a miserable commute compared to alternative options, and that is before the ghastly transfer at Bloor-Yonge. But f*** it, if the province is going to pay for it, I am down. Let's get as many stops as we can.

Look at it this way. The development that would come surrounding the stops, and the rise in property values in the adjacent neighbourhood = more property taxes for the city as a whole.

The Eglinton-Danforth corners would become quite the rejuvenated area and if EELRT is off the books under Ford it should be considered, if EELRT is moving forward then I can completely understand its omission.

There is really no long term cost or commuter benefits case to be made for the Lawrence stop being omitted for this alignment.

It would be unfortunate if the Government wasn't looking for a partnership with those that will profit when building transit.. And if they do get developers to chip in to recover some of cost of the stops the Star will still try to promote it as such a bad thing.

The General Hospital is on the near term plans for a rebuild so there could be some room for the Province to be directly involved with developers on this land. If the City wasn't so polarized chasing its tail with the dead LRT-subway argument it would be looking to sell a slice of land in the N/E Corner on McCowan & running down a good part of the corner on Lawrence.

^ I rarely post in this thread yet completely got that reference. Amazing how some UT users, including myself, generally stick to three or four threads most of the time.

With yesterday's revelation that the Progressive(?) Conservatives want to push ahead with a two-tier healthcare system, perhaps this is the opportunity to sell the Scarborough Hospital to a private developer, and include with it the condition that they fund the subway station partly underneath the hospital at Lawrence/McCowan!

For most residents in Scarborough a central subway station at Lawrence and a new General hospital sounds pretty damn progressive considering the nonsense of the rickety, isolated RT and deteriorating healthcare facilities across this Borough. I also wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of public-private partnership here to achieve both overdue needs.

If only Progressives(?) on council could have worked cohesively with all areas of the City on a well designed LRT or subway we may have seen progress long ago.

Absolutely - Scarberians deserve the best! That's why they should charge US-style fees to use a privatized Scarborough General Hospital.

Glad to see that Ford is pushing ahead closing more stations in Scarborough than he is opening! This is exactly what they deserve rather than the 50 or so better-used Scarborough LRT stops that would be built for less money in the Transit City

Now you are just going off topic on another de-rail

Private-public Healthcare has basically no relation in any way to private-public capital infrastructure. Transit operations and maintenance certainly could be compared but still a completely separate topic from this one. We might even agree on many facets there... But again it's completely off topic

The rest of your post is the standard (somehow allowable) UT Scarborough bashing and your own promotion of un-costed, unwanted "50 stop" poorly implemented, poorly connected LRT fantasy. Its the arrogant, polarizing rhetoric like this that actually helps elect the Torys and Fords. No large area of residents deserve this to be constantly referred to in this manner or constant talked down with such disrespectful disdain.

That would an interesting combination: paying US-style hospital fees after paying Canadian-style taxes ..
 
I'm not thrilled about the idea of seeking any private investments for SSE, just because that creates potential for even more delays while all the details are sorted out. 3P is fine when considered from the onset of a project. SSE has been in works for way too long, and should be build ASAP and without messing with the funding formulas.
 
Just for the sake of argument: which locations along the SSE route could interest private developers?

Lawrence East is totally unappealing, because of both the natural constraints (ravine and the hydro corridor) and the single-family zoning. The station there would be very handy to serve the hospital and connect to the Lawrence bus route, but there is nothing in that for private investors.

STC has considerable potential, but aren't the slots for future constructions sold already? There might be no room for new fees.

Sheppard / McCowan has potential as it is very under-developed, but getting the subway there would cost quite a bit; that's additional 1.7 km from STC.

Maybe, Eglinton and Brimley? Sell air rights for that location, and use the proceeds to fund stations at Brimley and Lawrence? No more tunnels to build, just the cost of 2 stations ..

The main concern is the delay caused by exploring that schema.
