Yeah I'm not understanding the lengthy bustitution unless they avoid the hydro corridor for the new station. Otherwise there's plenty of room for the it and crossover box. All they'd need to do is knock down the wall and install switches. That is like a two week job max.

I'm down for this extension.

I am glad they are taking these points into consideration:
- YES there is a plan to extend the subway to Markham Rd and Sheppard! Why Murray decided not to explain to the public about this baffles me though. He could have easily just painted that extension a different color, and explained they can add this if the other levels of government provide more money. Since it is essentially the SLRT line but with a subway (bridge instead of tunneling under the 401, it can't cost that much more).

- They are taking into consideration the double tracks for the Agincourt/Stouffville GO line. Glad they are looking to move on with this (can't wait for full day GO train service between Markham and Union station).

- Also good move to move the subway line east of the GO tracks. Might as well double track GO while we are at it since work is being done in the area.

Basically, this proves that the ONT government did not just make this up on the back of a napkin; actual work was done on this!

Since the subway will run in a new corridor, is it possible to operate the SRT until this thing is done? That will help reduce the need for buses.

If it is not going to be refurbished or replaced you may as well squeeze every ounce of life in it and run it into the ground.

Doubtful - the alignment isn't entirely new. And you can't really run it entirely into the ground for safety and perhaps reliability reasons.

Not without closing the GO line and CN operations, which won't happen.

Would the incremental money that would be required to build a subway from Scarborough Centre to Sheppard be close to the money needed to connect the SRT to the Eglinton line through an elevated line from Don Mills to Kennedy?

Should've stuck with the Eglinton-Scarborough crosstown plan...

The comment made at Metrolinx meeting today, STC most likely will be the end of the line as the line has to stop some place if there is no real demand beyond that point.

PULSE will service STC as well UoT.

Some real yes sir comments were made to support this extension as a number of thing will be sweep under the carpet to make it work.

The riders at Kennedy will now have to suffer years of bus shuttle to/from it to/from Warden to allow a new station to be built for this extension. If the dreamers think they can built a curve from the existing line before the station to cut down the time schedule, I know a number of bridges they may like to buy real cheap. Same for Ellesmere.

LRT will branch out from STC.

* LRT will branch out from STC when more funding comes. If people in Malvern got a penny for each time that has been said in the past 40 years...

Don't get yourselves all worked up over nothing...............there will be a new plan introduced next week.

Interesting ... to eliminate the tunnel between Ellesemere and Midland stations, they swap the GO tracks and TTC alignment, and then put the curve at-grade rather than in a tunnel.

Now why can't you do that with the converted LRT?

They could, but it wasn't really necessary if LRT is built in the corridor. It can handle more extreme grades and curvature than a subway could.

Oh frig yes.

Remember when McGuinty created Metrolinx to ensure it was giving independent advice, free from politics???

The timeline was asked at the meeting about Warden shuttle and the reply was years.

I have stated in the past that the new connection to the existing tunnel would require 1 to 6 months closure of Kennedy depending on where the connection is made for the new station from the existing tunnel.

You need 30 ft to the underside of the elevated guide way over the GO Tracks and you can get away at a 3-5% grade to get to that height. It will also mean taking the grade ramp and the elevated section further north since you have an industrial building in the way. You are looking about 1,000 feet to get to that height from where the tunnel ramp start today since you have an overpass to deal with there now. You maybe able to start a little further south, but not much.

By taking the line north would straighten the line out to the current Midland station location, but still require a curve to do so.

You could also start the grade ramp before Ellesmere, but you need to go up about 70 feet to get over the overpass and then drop down to the current elevation around Midland Station. You can't start the curve before Ellesmere as new Townhouses are being built there now and next to the corridor. Also east along Ellesmere as 3 story.

This is a very real concern.

Metrolinx are now supporting this subway.....then they need to explain why, if subway is a good idea, they never suggested it in the Big Move and what other parts of the Big Move do they think can/should be changed.

Minister Murray is all over twitter today dismissing critics of this subway plan with tweets like "Both the Prov and City rejected LRT and all Scarborough elected members support subway. That train left the Stn long ago."

So he is, essentially, saying that transit planning is all political and that, to me, makes me wonder why bother with a central planning body like ML....we are fully back to ad hoc, politically motivated, transit planning principals.

And what is getting rid of Metrolinx going to achieve? Look transit in this region will always be political. That's how it is and will always be. You will never get politics out of transit planning. As long as the politicians control the money, which is what actually gets transit built, there will always be politics involved.

Fine....then why go through the exercise of pretending otherwise? The Big Move is a heavily touted plan...that cost how many millions to create and it did not call for this subway.......so why bother if, as soon as the inevitable political interference comes, the plan is amended?

So, what would getting rid of ML do? It would save the money of running ML and all of its plans...which have little value if the chairman of ML is just gonna kowtow to the minister anyway.
