Walking around Lethbridge today I've seen 3 pairs of beat officers who were patrolling their Downtown.

That's more than I have seen in my last many trips to Edmonton.

It's time to bring beat patrol back.

Do you think police have the current resources to do that? Or that they are not using or prioritizing their existing resources well enough?

What gets me is that the city will ask the public to de-escalate conflict at LRT stations or any other hotspots.

In the last three years I have only seen police once on the street in the area of downtown I regularly go and it looked like they were going to some specific place.

If the Police Chief is telling City Council there are regular downtown patrols this is not accurate.

Forest from the trees.

While that is a stat that should be applauded, the everyday crime and disorder in our urban core, communities and neighbourhoods needs to see far more action on as it is something impacting many on a freakin' daily basis.

The shear number of people who tell me that they do not come Downtown anymore unless there is an Oilers game is astounding.

It's time to regain some civic pride for our core (which many have been working hard on), dignity of its areas, basic expectation of and a minimum bar for how we treat it.

Obviously, but my point is that many people who used to come Downtown to socialize, for dinner and on weekend simply do not do so anymore and much of it is as a result of the very low quality of experience, real safety concerns, destination/amenity options and overall look/feel.

It's time to change that.

I 100% agree. Until the mid-2010s, when visiting the city I would spend almost all of my time downtown for the restaurants, retail and entertainment. Since then, I rarely go there at all, especially because of the gutted retail options and the areas descent into lawlessness. I now only go to Edmonton for family-related matters and just don't venture into the core anymore, except to do a drive through and see what the state and condition of the area is like.

I used to be all about the downtown beforehand. Now, the question is why go there any more. That deeply saddens me.

Yes, first of all unless the headline is misleading this is not about crime downtown but throughout the city.

And secondly, it is not the occasional shooting that dissuaded people from going downtown, but a pervasive feeling it is not safe and of social disorder.

Crime related but not downtown - Cloverdale.

Talk about unnerving.

"A central Edmonton community is on edge after a home was destroyed in an apparent arson — with notes left on neighbouring properties demanding money."

A lot of this sort of thing has actually been in areas much further from downtown, but I suppose this one is close enough to count as downtown crime.

Regardless where this happens, this is horrible. I hope the perpetrators are caught and this sort of thing is shut down quickly.

Clearly there was some sort of incident on 105st/Jasper today as there were about 7 EPS cars, but then you walk a block over to 104st significant open drug use and LRT station disorder.

Icon I's covered entrance area had guys selling drugs and two guys doing meth with all of their crap right in front of the front door.

We really, REALLY need EPS et al. walking the beat again.

Yeah went to sebastian maniscalco yesterday. Went for dinner at zenari first. Parked at manulife. Had to walk by more zombies than normal people. Felt bad for my parents who felt uncomfortable and don’t come downtown much. And then it is funny, Sebastian even made jokes about waking up and wondering where all the people are, and that all he could see were zombies around
