MIT!!!!! This will piss off pff our friends in YYC….they have a complex that their “Fintech” prowess due to their cheap and abundant office space - call Center crap.

Bro, the Calgary tech sector should start leasing office space in your head the way they live rent free in there 😂 maybe that’s how we can lure more tech companies to the Edmonton area.

All in all, great news though. I was scrolling the website and lots of big names from the Edmonton business scene (particularly pharma and machine learning) are a part of this.

Shhhhhhhh! But don’t tell YYC’ers that their Neo Financial group is nothing more than immigrant slave labor tolling around in the bowels on their DT Bay building pretending to be under the guise of “Fintech” when it’s really just, “Thank you for calling Neo, please enter the last 4 digest of your phone number please.”

My credit card with Neo apparently got hacked and they now have had to replace it four times, so I feel there may be some security issues with their staff. I have had few problems with any other card I have.

A YYC credit with no assets, no cash on hand, no ties to a bank, yet banking on hopes and dreams that my cloud money will be safe....no thank you...call me traditional but

The only reason I ended up dealing with them is because they took over the Bay Credit cards. I find they aren't better than any of the other credit card companies in any way.

They do have a rewards program, but for me I find it is meager and applies only to a very limited amount of my spending. I actually get much better rewards from my bank credit card.

If we're talking $100B in investment, I hope a good portion of that is realized in Edmonton, specifically downtown. Hopefully the city's major business advocates are in touch with the local minister of this file.

Isn't most of our AI firms/infrastructure here in the city? Some might filter to Calgary but I'm sure we already have a first mover's advantage for this, especially with AltaML, AMII and the big universities too.

But lobbying for this would be better for our downtown than trying to scale down on bike lane construction lol, so I hope they do lobby hard.

With Alberta's high electricity prices compared to many other provinces, I have to wonder what the Minister and the UCP are smoking. Are they living in fantasyland?

These data centres look like Costco warehouses…..except worse….not sure we would want any of these in our DT. Frankly, YYC can have them all , use all of their power and water and leave us out of the picture. Best case scenario for labor would be a 1st year Electrician on stand by in case a wire needed to be re-threaded…..

Ok dt is not suitable. But to say Edmonton is not suitable and we should send our existing data centres packing then? We don't need that kind of work or business?

Alberta is home to 22 data centres, including 12 in Calgary and nine in Edmonton.

I doubt they’ll set up data centres smack Downtown (that’s not something we’d want either). These are massive power-hungry warehouses, and they’re probably gonna be set up in places like Nisku and Acheson. However, I would love to see the city lobby to place some of the new data centres in Blatchford. There are large parcels of land there slated for commercial development and data centres could help to quickly fill up the neighborhood. Plus, the heat from those servers could power the district heating system. And there would be plenty of tech yuppies fitting right in with Blatchford’s demographics.
