Haha! They are? Using a convention facility for volleyball? Oh well, I guess they can hang out at the giant fireplace between matches...too funny......they'll soon realize it can't fit nearly enough matches at the same time...it'll be short lived
Did you miss the part where I said it was held at the expo Center here? That’s where these events are held, large convention centres and the courts are borough in in tiles. They have a massive amount of floor space at bmo to use, plenty for all they courts they need, they up and scooped a pretty darn good event from Edmonton.

Here?! As in Edmonton? Yeah, I was the one who first mentioned it back in March - and it is 40,000 players, coaches etc. Did you miss that part? BMO is more of a convention facility ie, banquets etc. Expo is a larger square space - no round corners that can accommodate more courts than the BMO ever could......that's my point as well.....it was a good event...still unsure what you are fighting over???

Sorry, just not sure why you are saying bmo isn’t adequate. Halls A to F at BMO Center are completely rectangular and has high ceilings, it is a massive exhibition Center on that main floor, it will be more than adequate to hold this event.

Just frustrated we lost this that’s all.

Is it Explore Edmonton that manages these bids or local volleyball or provincial vball association?

Pretty sure it would be explore Edmonton as there’s no club level organization in the city to organize this. Doubtful volleyball Alberta has any hand in it.

It probably didn't help matters that there was a lack of media exposure for the volleyball nationals.
A black eye for Explore Edmonton.

All good.....I'm sure we can't have a monopoly on all tourneys - sounds like we had for 5 years? No worries - other tourneys will come our way.

Friendly reminder and venue update. This event will be held at the University of Alberta in the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science (CCIS) building. 11335 Saskatchewan Dr NW

Popular Urbanist YouTuber Ray Delahanty (CityNerd) is coming to Edmonton and will be part of a discussion hosted by Paths for People on all things Edmonton/urbanism. Very relevant and good timing if I do say so myself...

When: July 17, 2025
5:30 pm: Doors open
6:00 pm: Event begins
Venue: TBD

He'll also be producing a video on Edmonton as part of his CityVisit series. Tickets to the in person event are by donation and can be purchased here.

He's here now (staying in Riverdale I understand) and is exploring our city over the next few days, capturing footage and making notes for his upcoming video - part of his City Visits series which has included Sydney (more recently) along with Portland, Detroit and Montreal. And then July 17, as noted, is his public event. Will be fun to check out and then public social event at the Sugar Bowl afterwards - maybe a little steet party of sorts.

Pedego has provided him an e-bike to explore (and more easily get up and down the river valley) and I'm sure he'll be spending a good amount of time on foot and on the trains.

He has 330,000+ subscribers world-wide.

Recently, the Volleyball SuperNations hosted at the Expo Centre and the FIBA 3×3 basketball tournament combined for more than $55 million in economic impact to the city, according to Explore Edmonton. The activity has the group feeling “optimistic” about the future of the visitor economy in the city.

Volleyball Supernations typically refers to Volleyball Canada's Youth National Championships, which are held annually in Canada, and it's the premier domestic event for the Canadian volleyball community. These championships bring together teams from across Canada in various age groups (14U, 15U-18U) to compete for national titles.

While Calgary took the 15u-18u nationals next year, Edmonton will still host the 14u in 2026 regionals - a 4 day event at UofA.

I'm curious if he makes similar observations to other urbanist Youtubers who've come here, notably on density, biking networks and how our LRT overperforms compared to every American counterpart.
