100%. Alberta has the money for this to not be an either/or issue, and I feel like any outward statement of a "tight budget" is just a political move at this point.

While WTI prices did have a bit of a rough day today I am confident TMX allowing for expanded production is going to be a boon for provincial coffers. Some of these rail projects are about striking now to set us up for the future and improving the value proposition for those that have recently or yet to arrive in this province.

Lets not forget that the recently yet again cancelled Edmonton hospital, badly needed because population here has doubled since the last one was built over 30 years ago, was cancelled because it was too expensive.
Yet, this project will be probably be far more expensive that that. So I don't think politically that will go over very well.

Honestly man, this whole "UCP is out to destroy Edmonton" rhetoric is tiring. Even if she ends up half-assing the master plan and only building regional rail from YYC to Banff, while I will be livid beyond belief, it's not like we won't benefit. I go to Banff regularly, but I'd much rather take the train into Banff from Calgary than drive, even if it means I have to park my car in Calgary. And truth be told, I think it's more likely than not that if she bothers to arrange passenger rail on the CPKC corridor into Banff - which, may I remind you, will require some investment into double tracking many portions of the alignment - she'll more likely than not also put in the effort to support the high-speed rail project, especially when there are private firms interested in the project.

Smith excels at performative politics, much like our PM, except hers leans right. Big announcements then nothing much happens.
I expect she will continue to dangle this carrot for Calgary, but would not be surprised if not much happens. Of course, I expect her to do even less for Edmonton.

This is very interesting because Air Canada's strong opposition in the past is one thing that held this back. Perhaps they have now realized this sort of partnership can work by what they have seen in Europe.

agreed, should have had high speed rail between Calgary/Edmonton decades ago, it would be a no brainer in Europe, and could be for both passenger freight. Think how much expanding the QEII will cost us in the future...

I would hope they've figured it out. There's certainly cost advantages to using a train as a feed liner over a swarm of DHC-8's, let alone any kind of jet on an absurdly short hop. But they do have a history of wallowing in their own crapulence.

Air Canada has recently instituted a bus service from Hamilton to Pearson vs a plane. Not sure how well it's operating as the passengers have a choice with other airlines vs a bus, no matter how nice, it's slow

I don't think anyone is flying from Hamilton to Pearson anyways, its not that far. However, it does allow Air Canada to direct traffic to Pearson where they have more flights which probably benefits them.
But if anyone can take the bus, then no guarantees for them, unless they require you to show an Air Canada boarding pass, reservation or something. I feel Air Canada has decided short haul flights in central Canada are not that lucrative, maybe they don't want to or can't easily add more capacity.

My wife took the AC bus from Kitchener to Pearson and said the experience was ok. You travel on an Air Canada ticket, on a branded bus with 2x1 seating, plenty of leg room and your connection is guaranteed (ie if you're stuck in traffic, they'll rebook you). Only downside is you still have to check your own bag when you arrive at the airport.
