Two more shots of the Imperial Bank from 1947 (FAC33, look what you started). Looks like the Cawthra House has just been demolished and the rest of the site is being cleared for the BNS Building:

Thanks! These are headed for my King and Bay file. Somehow I think this project is taking on a life of its own....

I was pondering as I walked through this intersection today as to the size of these buildings. The old BNS building between the Imperial and Commerce Court was such a small thing. I'd love to do a Then and Now, although getting the perspective of either of these two photos would be tough I'm wondering where they were taken from, and what the series of black projecting things on the right of these two photos are. Given the time frame--are they taken from the under-construction BMO building? Or something further up the street?

I think it is the old BMO building under construction.

Speaking of the small BNS building between the Imperial Bank and the Bank of Commerce building, there's a wonderful set of pics of it taken in 1951 in the Panda Archives:

This piece from the top of the BNS is preserved at the Guild Inn.

Back to the Financial District and the corner of King and Jordan:

The Standard Bank (from https://www.cibc.com/ca/inside-cibc/history/mergers-amalgamations/bank-of-commerce.html):

The Standard Bank of Canada, 1873-1928
Founded in 1873, the St. Lawrence Bank was organized by Toronto businessmen led by John Charles Fitch. Financial troubles plagued the bank in its early years and in 1876, it was reorganized under the name The Standard Bank of Canada. With new management, business improved and the bank began to grow. By 1907, it had nearly 50 branches and soon added another 27 with the acquisition of The Western Bank of Canada (1882-1909), a regional bank headquartered in Oshawa. The enlarged institution soon expanded into the western provinces and later combined with The Sterling Bank of Canada (1905-1924), a mostly regional bank with its headquarters in Toronto. After this merger, The Standard had 243 branches, 176 of them in Ontario. Increased competition and a desire to expand more extensively in western Canada led The Standard to merge with The Commerce on November 5, 1928.
