Thank you all for those concise explanations.
Not many people today would believe that there once was such a magnificent church in the centre of downtown Toronto.

Don Valley Brick Works
The immensity of the original operation is surprising.
Has everyone visited the restored/renovated site recently (now named:Evergreen Brick Works)?

Edit: Ha, was beaten to it! Although the street front does look different. Almost that there was another building between them, was there?
The map says that is where the fire started "with a Blast".

The building on Queen was the original Simpson's store:

Was the pit filled in? If so - what was it filled with in? WOuld have ben interesting to have a "lake" in the Don Valley at that location.

There IS a lake there now I doubt it is as deep as the pit used to be but it is there as a series of interconnected ponds. Clearly you have never visited the Brickworks and, as noted above, it is WELL worth a visit. The view from the lookout on the east side is great.

the Governors Bridge Lookout —

In the background above, you can see the north wall of the former quarry excavation, a world-renowned geological site.

From the Lookout, a magnificent view of the valley —

Finally, a view from the top of the north wall itself —

A most unusual building - The Toronto Mail - on King at Bay?

Yup; demolished at the end of the 30s on behalf of the BMO that was in its turn bulldozed for FCP. (And one of those candidates for "Toronto's first skyscraper")
